The Xi'an Flight Academy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force was formed in 2011 by the merger of the Second Flight Academy of the Air Force and the Fifth Flight Academy of the Air Force. The Second Flight Academy of the Air Force was born in the same year as the Republic, and has a glorious combat history and fine revolutionary traditions. Its predecessor was the "Old Northeast Aviation School", which was established in Changchun, Northeast China on December 1, 1949 and was named the "Second Bombing School" at that time. At the end of the same year, it was renamed the "Second Aviation School of the Chinese People's Liberation Army". On March 1, 1966, according to the order of the Central Military Commission, the school headquarters moved from Changchun, Jilin to Jiajiang, Sichuan; in June 1976, it was named the "Second Aviation School of the Air Force"; in September 1986, it was named the Second Flight Academy of the Air Force. In September 1992, it was renamed the Branch of the Sixteenth Flight Academy of the Air Force (Jiajiang Bomber); in June 1993, the Second Flight Academy of the Air Force was restored. On July 26, 1999, the Central Military Commission ordered the merger of the Second Air Force Academy and the Sixteenth Air Force Academy to form the new Second Air Force Academy. The original Sixteenth Air Force Academy was renamed the Xi'an Branch of the Second Air Force Academy, which was affiliated to the Chengdu Military Region Air Force. On June 10, 2004, the Central Military Commission ordered the cancellation of the Xi'an Branch of the Second Air Force Academy, and the academy was moved from Jiajiang, Sichuan to Huxian, Shaanxi.
