Shandong University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education with a long history, complete disciplines, strong strength and distinctive characteristics. It has an important influence at home and abroad. In 2017, it successfully entered the ranks of world-class universities (Class A). The predecessor of Shandong University was Shandong University Hall founded in 1901, which is known as the origin university of modern higher education in China. Its medical discipline originated in 1864, opening the precedent of modern higher medical education in China. Since its birth, the school has gone through several historical development periods, including Shandong University Hall, National Qingdao University, National Shandong University, Shandong University, and the new Shandong University formed by the merger of the former Shandong University, Shandong Medical University, and Shandong University of Technology. For more than 120 years, Shandong University has always adhered to the school motto of "preparing talents for the world and striving for prosperity for the country", deeply practiced the school motto of "endless learning and great spirit", worked hard and passed on the torch, and formed a school spirit of "respecting reality and seeking innovation", cultivated a large number of outstanding talents with both moral integrity and ability, and made important contributions to the national and regional economic and social development. The school covers a total area of more than 8,000 acres, forming a school-running pattern of one school in three locations (Jinan, Weihai, and Qingdao). It is one of the universities with the most complete disciplines in China at present, and is representative among comprehensive universities. It has 47 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 52 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 9 professional degree doctoral authorization categories, 34 master authorization categories, 97 undergraduate enrollment majors, and 46 postdoctoral research mobile stations, covering all disciplines except agronomy and military science. There are more than 75,000 students and more than 4,800 full-time teachers, including 21 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including appointment system), 52 Changjiang Scholars, 31 Changjiang Youth, 70 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Science Fund, 74 winners of the Excellent Youth Science Fund, 52 leading talents of the National Special Support Program, 64 young top talents, and 39 selected candidates of the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project. There are 7 national (national) key laboratories and 10 other national scientific research platforms in natural sciences; 4 key research bases of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, and 5 other national scientific research platforms in humanities and social sciences. It has 4 directly affiliated hospitals, including Qilu Hospital of Shandong University. Inter-school cooperation agreements have been signed with more than 200 schools in 32 countries and regions. Since socialism with Chinese characteristics entered a new era, the school has deeply understood the spiritual essence of "running a university rooted in the land of China", adhered to and strengthened the party's overall leadership over the school, and vigorously implemented the "seven strategies" with an enterprising attitude of pursuing excellence and seizing the day to accelerate the historic transformation from "big to strong". The school's overall strength and international influence have been significantly enhanced. The academic influence and contribution capabilities of 20 disciplines have entered the top 1% of the ESI world rankings, and 5 disciplines have entered the top 1‰ of ESI. Disciplines such as financial mathematics, crystal materials, condensed matter physics, colloid interface chemistry, microbiology, mechanics, materials science, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular function repair, new drug manufacturing, and Chinese classical philosophy have reached the domestic first-class level. Some directions and fields are already at the world level. The "Shandong University gene" of patriotism, sense of responsibility, pragmatic character, and innovative literacy is widely praised. On May 9, 2021, General Secretary Xi Jinping wrote back to all editorial staff of the Editorial Department of Literature, History and Philosophy of Shandong University, fully affirming the positive contributions made by the Editorial Department of Literature, History and Philosophy under the leadership of the Party over the past 70 years, with generations of editors upholding the truth, innovating, and passing on the torch, to promoting Chinese civilization and prospering academic research. He expressed high hopes for the success of the magazine and put forward clear requirements for the vast number of philosophy and social science workers, including teachers of Shandong University. This reflects his kind care for Shandong University. All Shandong University people are greatly encouraged and feel a great sense of responsibility. In the new era and new journey, under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the school will comprehensively and deeply study and implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, deeply understand the decisive significance of the "two establishments", enhance the "four consciousnesses", strengthen the "four self-confidences", and achieve the "two safeguards".
