China's higher maritime education originated in Shanghai. In 1909, the Shipbuilding Department of Shanghai Higher Industrial School (Nanyang Public School) of the Ministry of Posts and Communications of the late Qing Dynasty pioneered my country's higher maritime education. Wusong Merchant Marine School was established in 1912 and renamed Wusong Merchant Marine College in 1933. In 1959, the Ministry of Communications established Shanghai Maritime College in Shanghai. In 2004, it was renamed Shanghai Maritime University with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In order to better serve the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center and the development of national shipping industry, according to the Shanghai University Layout and Structural Adjustment Plan, the main body of Shanghai Maritime University moved to Lingang New City (now Lingang New Area of Shanghai Free Trade Zone) in 2008. In 2019, the school successfully held a series of activities for its 110th anniversary. Shanghai Maritime University is a multidisciplinary applied research university with shipping, logistics and ocean as its characteristics, and has disciplines such as engineering, management, economics, law, literature, science and art. In 2008, the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and the Ministry of Transport signed an agreement to jointly build Shanghai Maritime University. In 2018, the school was included in the construction of high-level local universities in Shanghai. The school has 3 postdoctoral research stations (transportation engineering, electrical engineering, management science and engineering), 4 first-level doctoral programs (transportation engineering, management science and engineering, ship and ocean engineering, electrical engineering), 17 first-level master's degree authorization points, 13 professional degree authorization categories, and 52 undergraduate majors. It has 21 provincial and ministerial key research bases. There is currently 1 national key (cultivation) discipline, 1 Shanghai peak discipline, 2 Shanghai plateau disciplines, 9 ministerial and municipal key disciplines, and 5 disciplines of engineering, computer science, general social sciences, materials science, and environmental science and ecology are among the top 1% of ESI in the world. The port and shipping logistics discipline remains a global leader. There are 5 national characteristic majors, 1 national comprehensive reform pilot major, 15 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 6 majors in the Ministry of Education's Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program, and 17 Shanghai undergraduate education highlands. There are 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching demonstration centers, 5 national engineering practice education centers, and 1 national demonstration engineering professional degree graduate joint training base. 1 national vocational education "dual-qualified" teacher training base (water transportation). 1 national foreign-related legal talent collaborative training innovation base (cultivation). It has a water training center and a 48,000-ton bulk cargo teaching and practice ship "Yuming". It was awarded excellent in the 2004 Ministry of Education's undergraduate teaching level assessment and the 2006 Ministry of Education's English major teaching assessment. In recent years, the scientific and technological service capabilities have been continuously improved, and a number of national scientific research projects and science and technology progress awards at the ministerial and municipal levels have been won. The school implements a two-level management system of school and college. It currently has the Merchant Marine College, the School of Transportation, the School of Economics and Management (Shanghai Advanced International Shipping College, Asia Cruise College), the School of Logistics Engineering (China-Netherlands Mechanical and Electrical Engineering College), the School of Law, the School of Information Engineering, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Marine Science and Engineering, the School of Science, the Xu Beihong Academy of Fine Arts, the School of Marxism, the Institute of Logistics Science and Engineering, the Department of Physical Education, the School of International Education, the School of Continuing Education, and the Shanghai Port School. Among the more than 26,000 students, there are more than 16,000 full-time undergraduates, nearly 8,000 postgraduates of various types, and more than 600 international students. Among the nearly 1,200 full-time teachers, there are nearly 200 professors. The school is committed to cultivating specialized talents of all levels and types needed by the national shipping industry. It has sent more than 200,000 graduates to global port and shipping units and government agencies. It is known as the "cradle of senior shipping talents." In 2013, the school established the China (Shanghai) Free Trade Zone Supply Chain Research Institute and the Shanghai Advanced International Shipping College. The China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone Supply Chain Research Institute organically combines the construction of the pilot free trade zone with supply chain research to improve the construction level of the pilot free trade zone industrial chain, promote the transformation and development of the pilot free trade zone's goods trade to service trade, and promote the transformation of government regulatory functions. Shanghai Advanced International Shipping College adopts the internationally advanced business school operation model, shares resources with outstanding educational institutions around the world, strives to create a domestic leading and internationally renowned shipping finance education brand, and builds an influential shipping high-end talent output base. In 2008, more than 20 units including Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, Shanghai Municipal Commission of Urban and Rural Construction and Transportation, Shanghai Maritime University, and Hongkou District People's Government jointly initiated the establishment of the Shanghai International Shipping Research Center. The center is affiliated with Shanghai Maritime University and is a research and consulting institution for the development of the international shipping industry. It provides decision-making consulting and information services to the government and domestic and foreign enterprises and shipping institutions. It is one of the first "college knowledge service platforms" established by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. In 2014, the Municipal Education Commission listed the platform as the "Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center". The school has established inter-school exchanges and cooperation with more than 100 sister colleges abroad, and carried out teacher exchanges, cooperative education, cooperative scientific research, student exchanges, etc. It has established close ties with internationally renowned shipping organizations/institutions such as the United Nations International Maritime Organization, the Baltic and International Maritime Council, and the Norwegian Classification Society. Since 2010, the "International Class" has been opened, inviting students from maritime colleges in the United States, South Korea, Poland, Russia, Germany and other countries to study "Navigation Technology" and "Shipping Management" at the school. In 2011, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the school cooperated with the Central and West African Maritime University in Ghana to organize an undergraduate education program in "Logistics Management" and began to recruit students in Africa. This is the first overseas education program for local universities in Shanghai to issue undergraduate diplomas from Chinese universities. In 2012, the school was approved by the Ministry of Education to officially become an "institution that accepts Chinese government scholarships for international students in China."
