Shantou University is a comprehensive university under the jurisdiction of Guangdong Province established in 1981 with the approval of the State Council. It is a university jointly established by the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Province and the Li Ka Shing Foundation. It is a university with key disciplines in Guangdong Province's high-level universities, the first experimental demonstration school for the reform of higher education system and mechanism in Guangdong Province, a pilot university for deepening the reform of education evaluation in the new era in Guangdong Province, and a cultivation and creation unit for the "Party Building Demonstration University" in Guangdong Province. It is also the only public university in the world that is continuously funded by a private foundation, the Li Ka Shing Foundation. In October 2022, the East Coast Campus of Shantou University was officially opened. The East Coast Campus will focus on interdisciplinary disciplines, emerging engineering disciplines, and applied humanities and social sciences, and directly connect with the needs of regional economic and social development.
