Shanxi Vocational College of Art is a new college established in March 2020 by reforming and reorganizing nine units including the former Shanxi Vocational College of Art, the former Shanxi Vocational College of Drama, Shanxi Jin Opera Theater, and Shanxi Peking Opera Theater. It is affiliated to the Shanxi Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism and receives business guidance from the Shanxi Provincial Department of Education. It is the only higher vocational art college in the province. The college has a long history and profound cultural heritage. The predecessor of the former Shanxi Vocational College of Art was the Shanxi Art School, which was founded in 1951 and was the first art school in Shanxi. Li Qun, a people's artist and famous printmaker, was the first president. In 1958, it was upgraded to Shanxi Art College (undergraduate), which was the first independent undergraduate art college in Shanxi. In 2000, it was jointly restructured into Shanxi Vocational College of Art, which is the first higher vocational college of art in the country. The former Shanxi Vocational College of Drama was founded in 1958 as the Drama School of Shanxi Experimental Theater. Ding Guoxian, a famous Jin Opera performing art "Xusheng Master", was the president. In 2002, it merged with the Shanxi Drama Research Institute to form Shanxi Drama Vocational College. In the course of more than 70 years of development, Shanxi Vocational College of Art and Shanxi Vocational College of Drama have a deep historical origin. After several name changes and mergers, they have trained more than 40,000 art talents of all levels and types for the society, becoming an important base for the cultivation and education of cultural and artistic talents in our province, and gradually forming the school-running characteristics of "producing talents, producing works, and serving the society", and embarking on an innovative path of "market-oriented, diversified school-running, practice-first, and serving the society". The college successfully applied for Shanxi Province's high-quality higher vocational colleges in 2019, and was identified as a high-level school construction unit of Shanxi Province's "Double High Plan" in 2021, once again entering the fast lane of development. At present, the college has 540 faculty and staff and 5,203 students, including 3,917 higher vocational students and 1,286 secondary vocational students. The majors include 31 higher vocational majors in 6 major professional categories, including dance performance, music performance, art design, fine arts, drama and film performance, broadcasting and hosting, and radio and television program production. Many majors are national and provincial key majors and specialty majors, national and provincial key training rooms, 1 national professional teaching resource library, 1 national boutique course, and 15 provincial boutique courses. There are dozens of experts in contact with the Ministry of Culture and the provincial level, and more than 80 visiting professors including the famous scholar Yu Qiuyu and the national first-level director Zhang Jigang. The college actively invites industry masters to teach and preach, and has established more than 20 studios such as "Wang Aiai Studio", "Wu Zhong Studio" and "Four Major Bangzi Studios". The college has choreographed and created a series of boutique repertoires such as "A Handful of Sour Jujubes", "Powder and Ink Spring and Autumn", and "Liberation", and has successively won the "Five One Project" Award, the National Stage Art Boutique Project Top Ten Boutique Repertoires, Wenhua Award, Cultural Award and other important national awards, and has made outstanding contributions to telling Chinese stories and spreading Chinese voices. In 2021, it took advantage of the new advantages of the "institution-troupe integration" reform and jointly created and launched the large-scale original drama "Taihang" with affiliated institutions and troupes, winning unanimous praise from the society. Due to its outstanding educational achievements, since 2014, the college has been identified by the Ministry of Culture as a "National Cultural Cadre Training Base" and a "National Grassroots Cultural Team Training Base", and has been identified by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Culture as a "Chinese Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritors Research and Training Program Participating College", and has always been at the forefront of similar colleges in the country in terms of talent training, artistic creation and serving the society. Standing at a new starting point, the college is taking a high-spirited attitude to deeply study and implement Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, implement the decisions and arrangements of the provincial party committee and the provincial government, and actively participate in the practice of adjusting and optimizing the layout of colleges and universities. It is moving towards the goal of "first-class in the province and a national model" for the construction of vocational undergraduate programs proposed by the provincial party committee, and strives to realize the grand blueprint as soon as possible. The future is promising. The new college will surely become a powerful force in the field of cultural tourism education in our province and even the whole country.
