South Central University for Nationalities is a comprehensive general institution of higher learning directly affiliated with the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. It is a university jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, Hubei Province, and Wuhan City. The school was founded in 1951 and is one of the earliest ethnic universities established after the founding of New China.
