The predecessor of Suzhou City College was Wenzheng College of Soochow University, which was founded in 1998. It is the first public-private secondary college registered with the Ministry of Education in the country and was approved to become an independent college in 2005. In December 2020, the Ministry of Education replied to the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, agreeing to the conversion of Wenzheng College of Soochow University to Suzhou City College. Suzhou City College is an independent public undergraduate institution, managed by the People's Government of Jiangsu Province, organized by the People's Government of Suzhou City, and supported by Soochow University. The school adheres to the school-running philosophy of "local, application-oriented, open, and characteristic", and strives to create a modern, high-level application-oriented university with distinctive characteristics, domestic first-class, and internationally renowned. The school is located in Suzhou International Education Park in the southwest of the ancient city of Suzhou, adjacent to the Shihu Scenic Area, a national Taihu Lake Scenic Area, with a beautiful natural environment and rich historical and cultural resources. In 2022, it was awarded the first batch of "Jiangsu Province Green School (College)". The school library is located on the beautiful Cuiwei Lake. It is one of the representative works of Wang Shu, the winner of the "Nobel Prize in Architecture" - the Pritzker Prize. In 2003, it won the China Architecture Art Award for Excellence in Public Architecture. The school currently has seven major disciplines: literature, science, engineering, economics, management, law, and art. There are eight colleges and basic teaching departments, including the School of Marxism, the School of Urban Culture and Communication, the School of Urban Governance and Public Affairs, the School of Digital Economy and Management, the School of Design and Art, the School of Computing Science and Artificial Intelligence, the School of Optics and Electronic Information, and the School of Intelligent Manufacturing and Smart Transportation. There are currently 46 undergraduate majors and nearly 12,000 full-time undergraduates. The school insists on innovation-driven development, takes serving Suzhou's economic and social development as its own responsibility, and fully implements the strategic deployment of the Suzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government on expanding and strengthening humanities and arts disciplines. 17 scientific research platforms have been established, including the Suzhou Development Research Institute, the Contemporary Suzhou Research Institute, the Ancient Books Compilation Research Institute, the Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance and Protection Research Institute, the Contemporary Writers Creation and Research Center, and the Suzhou Future City Design Research Institute. The school took the initiative to undertake the important task of the Suzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government on the construction of the Taihu Research Institute. In September 2023, the Taihu Research Institute was officially established. The institute is committed to the sorting of ecological resources, cultural inheritance and innovative development in the Taihu Lake Basin. It cooperated with the Industrial Culture Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to carry out two projects and successfully obtained approval for the Suzhou Social Science Fund Major Special Project. Since the end of 2021, Wenzheng Think Tank has been rated as a new type of think tank in Suzhou. 45 decision-making consulting results have been published in the municipal and above internal references, of which 28 results have been approved by the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee and above, and won two first prizes and one second prize for CTTI's annual think tank outstanding results. In order to implement the Suzhou Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government on strengthening the protection, inheritance and research of intangible cultural heritage, the school and troupes, museums, and enterprises jointly established the Suzhou Pingtan Talent Training Consortium and the Suzhou Kunqu Talent Training Consortium. Suzhou Pingtan School and Suzhou Art School have also been successfully listed as affiliated schools of Suzhou City College. Multiple parties have worked together to build an art talent training system with Suzhou characteristics, and jointly promote the systematic protection, dynamic inheritance and innovative development of intangible cultural heritage. The school adheres to the win-win cooperation concept of "development through service and support through contribution", and has reached more than 400 cooperation agreements with local governments, enterprises, and industry associations. It actively focuses on the needs of Suzhou's industrial transformation and development, and actively adjusts and optimizes the discipline and professional structure and layout. It has successfully obtained the approval of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's Optoelectronic Information "Specialized and New" Industry College, and established four school-level industry colleges: Health Care Industry College, Digital Finance Industry College, Artificial Intelligence Industry College, and Intelligent Transportation Equipment Industry College. It has opened six micro-majors in urban digital construction and operation and maintenance, health services and management, new energy power generation technology, digital economy and digital transformation, intelligent construction and smart transportation, and semiconductors and flat panel displays. In December 2022, the school was successfully approved as a project construction unit for the granting of master's degrees. The existing provincial "14th Five-Year Plan" key discipline optical engineering, the key laboratory of biophotonic technology has been rated as a Suzhou key laboratory (Class A), archival science, optoelectronic information science and engineering, information engineering, electronic information science and technology, computer science and technology, Chinese language and literature, and English majors are provincial first-class professional construction points, electronic information science and technology, Internet of Things engineering and information engineering majors are provincial industry-education integration brand professional project construction points, English major is a provincial international talent training brand professional project construction project, and computer science and technology major is a provincial outstanding engineer education and training plan 2.0 major. The school adheres to the socialist direction of running schools, always takes talent training as the central task, takes moral education as the foundation, improves the collaborative education pattern, and strives to cultivate high-quality application-oriented talents with comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor, solid foundation, broad knowledge, strong sense of social responsibility, and innovative spirit and practical ability. The school actively explores the cross-compound talent training model of applied undergraduate colleges, founded Wenzheng College, and established engineering base classes and liberal arts base classes; actively builds a teacher-student community governance mechanism, and successfully listed in the Ministry of Education's "one-stop" student community comprehensive management model construction independent pilot colleges. The school adheres to the principle of open education and continuously promotes high-quality international cooperation. With the focus on student exchange, teacher visits, academic exchanges, and scientific research cooperation, it has established close cooperative relations with more than 50 universities in more than 10 countries and regions. It has jointly organized two Sino-foreign cooperative education projects with the University of Idaho in the United States, namely electrical engineering and automation, and Internet of Things Engineering; and held a joint training project for mutual recognition of credits between China and the United States, which includes three majors: finance, journalism, and English. The school is committed to the innovative and entrepreneurial education of "integration of specialization and creation", and takes the cultivation of students' innovative and entrepreneurial awareness, ability improvement, and entrepreneurial spirit as the starting point and foothold of the school's innovative and entrepreneurial work and talent training reform. The "three creations" concept of innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship runs through the entire process of talent training.
