Tianjin Conservatory of Music was founded in 1958 and is one of the first institutions in China to grant master's and bachelor's degrees. The first president of Tianjin Conservatory of Music was Miao Tianrui, a famous music educator and theorist. After more than 60 years of construction, the conservatory has developed into an important institution of higher art education that cultivates professionals in music, dance, drama, and film and television. It currently has three first-level disciplines: art theory, music and dance, and drama and film, and one professional master's (MFA) authorization point. Music and dance, and drama and film are municipal key disciplines. There are 12 undergraduate majors, including music performance, among which there are 2 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 3 Tianjin-level advantageous and characteristic majors, and 3 applied majors. The conservatory is divided into two campuses, the south and the north. There are 430 faculty and staff members and 3,246 full-time students, including 2,728 undergraduates and 518 graduate students. There are 15 teaching departments including musicology, composition, vocal music, folk vocal music, folk music, orchestra, piano, accordion keyboard, music education, art management, modern music, dance, drama, film and television, basic course department, ideological and political teaching center, as well as the College of Continuing Education for the Blind, the Attached Middle School and the Attached Primary School (cooperation), forming a complete multi-level and multi-type art talent training model and training system. The college has a group of famous musicians, scholars and academic leaders who have a great influence in the music circles at home and abroad, and has brought together a number of excellent teaching and scientific research results. There are 261 full-time teachers and 138 master's supervisors. In recent years, the college has mainly introduced, recruited and cultivated talents, adhered to the principle of "all over the world", and continuously expanded and strengthened the dimensions and strength of talent team building. Since the "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan", a total of 120 people have been approved for talent projects at all levels and above the school level. In recent years, the college has undertaken a number of national art funds, national social science funds, and provincial and ministerial scientific research projects, and teachers and students have won more than 300 third prizes or above in important international and domestic competitions. The college adheres to the high-level and distinctive school-running direction, takes talent cultivation as its school-running purpose, and currently has national-level specialty construction sites, national-level planned textbooks, national-level college student innovation and entrepreneurship projects, etc.; it has Tianjin's advantageous specialty, application-oriented specialty, quality courses, famous teachers, teaching teams, teaching achievement awards, professional comprehensive reform pilots, experimental teaching demonstration centers, humanities and social science bases, etc.; it has established an opera center and opened open academic exchange platforms such as "Tianlai Forum" and "Music Lecture Hall". It has been approved for a number of national art fund-funded projects, including the original opera "Yue Fei" large-scale stage play project, the "Accordion Art National Promotion" talent training project, and the youth art creation talent training funding project, which fully demonstrates the characteristics of the college's disciplinary advantage resources and reflects the results of collaborative innovation and training of talents: the college's youth national orchestra, youth symphony orchestra, youth chorus, youth drama troupe, youth dance troupe and other art performance groups are active on the domestic and international music and art stage. The college adheres to the open school-running policy, actively carries out high-level international music and cultural exchanges, and cooperates with the world's top university, the Juilliard School, to open the Tianjin Conservatory of Music Juilliard Institute and Tianjin Juilliard School. In September 2020, the Tianjin Conservatory of Music Juilliard Institute welcomed its first graduate students. The college also conducts academic exchanges with many famous foreign higher music colleges such as the Royal Danish Academy of Music; it has held five "Tianjin May Music Festivals", four "Tianjin International Accordion Art Festivals and International Competitions", five international accordion master classes, and "Tianjin International Modern Music Festival and Exchange of New Works for Young and Middle-aged People" and many other rich large-scale academic activities; it invites famous composers, theorists, and performers from home and abroad to give academic lectures and master class teaching, which has played an important role in promoting music and cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
