Tianjin University (Tianjin University), referred to as Tianda, was formerly known as Beiyang University. It was founded on October 2, 1895. It is the first modern university in China and pioneered China's modern higher education. After the defeat of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895, the school was founded in Tianjin with the imperial approval of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty under the school motto of "the way to strengthen oneself is to cultivate talents, and the way to seek talents is to establish schools first". Sheng Xuanhuai was the first supervisor. The school was originally named Beiyang University Hall, with a first-class school (undergraduate) and a second-class school (preparatory school). The first-class school has four disciplines: law, engineering, mining and machinery. In 1900, the Eight-Power Allied Forces invaded Tianjin and Beijing, and the school was forced to close. It was later reopened in April 1903 at the Xigu Arsenal in Tianjin. In January 1912, the "Beiyang University Hall" was renamed "Beiyang University", and in 1913 it was renamed "National Beiyang University". In 1928, the university district system was tried out and it was renamed "National Beiping University Second Institute of Technology". In 1929, according to the "University Organization Law", the school was renamed "National Beiyang Institute of Technology". In 1937, after the outbreak of the "July 7 Incident", the school moved west according to the order of the Ministry of Education. On September 10, it jointly established the National Xi'an Temporary University with Peking University, Peking Normal University and Peking Research Institute. In March 1938, the temporary university was renamed "National Northwest United University". In July 1938, the National Northwest United University was reorganized into the National Northwest University, the National Northwest Institute of Technology, the National Northwest Normal College and the National Northwest Medical College. Among them, Beiyang Institute of Technology, Peking University Institute of Technology, Northeastern University Institute of Technology and the private Jiaozuo Institute of Technology jointly formed the National Northwest Institute of Technology, located in Chenggu County, Shaanxi Province. During the Anti-Japanese War, alumni from all walks of life demanded the restoration of the National Beiyang Institute of Technology. In December 1942, the Executive Yuan of the National Government upgraded the original Zhejiang Provincial Yingshi University to a national university, separated its Institute of Technology and made it independent as the National Beiyang Institute of Technology. In 1944, Li Shutian planned to build the Xijing Branch of the Beiyang Institute of Technology in Xi'an. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, teachers and students from the National Beiyang Institute of Technology (Taishun), the Xijing Branch of the Beiyang Institute of Technology, the Northwest Institute of Technology and the Beiping Department (the Dean of the School of Science, Chen Xiumin, took over the "Fifth Branch of Beiping Linda" and established the Beiping Department of Beiyang University) returned to Tianjin to restore the National Beiyang University. In 1946, it was renamed "Beiyang University". In 1951, Beiyang University merged with Hebei Institute of Technology and was named Tianjin University by the state. In 1952, the adjustment of colleges and departments of colleges and universities across the country began. Tianjin University transferred more than a dozen departments and groups, enriched and established a number of new universities, and nurtured the fledgling higher education in China. In 1959, it was designated as one of the first national key universities by the CPC Central Committee. After the reform and opening up, Tianjin University was one of the first universities to be built under the "211 Project" and the "985 Project", and was selected as a Class A university in the national "World-Class University Construction". The development of Tianjin University has always received the cordial care and strong support of the main leaders of the Party and the country. Comrades such as Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, Jiang Zemin, Hu Jintao, and Xi Jinping have visited the school. Since its establishment, the school has adhered to the mission of "promoting education and strengthening the country", the school motto of "seeking truth from facts", the school spirit of "rigorous scholarship", the tradition of "patriotism and dedication" and the pursuit of "determination to innovate", and has made outstanding contributions to the country's economic and social development. So far, it has trained more than 300,000 high-level talents for the country and society. For a long time, through the unremitting efforts of all teachers and students of the school, Tianjin University has become a high-level research university with strong faculty, distinctive disciplines, first-class education quality and scientific research level in China, and great influence in the world. Tianjin University has Weijin Road Campus, Beiyang Park Campus and Binhai Industrial Research Institute Campus. The Weijin Road campus covers a total area of 1.362 million square meters, the Beiyang Park campus covers a total area of 2.436 million square meters, and the Binhai Industrial Research Institute campus covers a total area of 309,000 square meters. The school currently has 33,413 full-time students, including 18,864 undergraduates, 9,727 master's students, and 4,822 doctoral students. There are 4,849 faculty and staff, including 13 academicians, 66 winners of the National "Outstanding Youth Science Fund", 91 winners of the National "Excellent Youth Science Fund", 51 leading talents of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", 31 young top talents, and 974 professors. The school insists on student development as the center, and strives to cultivate outstanding talents with patriotism, global vision, innovative spirit, practical ability, and can lead the future. Unswervingly use Xi Jinping's new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics to cultivate souls and educate people, and deepen the comprehensive reform of talent training with "three-dimensional education" and "five-pronged education". As the leader of the national new engineering construction working group, it proposed the "Tianjin University Action" for new engineering, took the lead in the country to release the "Tianjin University Plan" for new engineering construction and updated it iteratively, and took the lead in building the "International Alliance of New Engineering Education" and the "National New Engineering Education Innovation Center". It won 1 special prize and 3 first prizes in the 2022 National Teaching Achievement Award, ranking first in the country in terms of the total number of awards. There are 9 winners of the National Teaching Outstanding Teacher Award; 9 national teaching teams; 12 national engineering practice education centers; 7 national experimental teaching demonstration centers; 3 national virtual simulation experimental teaching centers; 5 national virtual simulation experimental teaching projects; 82 national first-class courses; 16 national first-class virtual simulation experimental teaching courses; 6 national bilingual teaching demonstration courses; 54 national first-class undergraduate majors; the national "Basic Discipline Outstanding Students Training Program 2.0 bases"; 5 national "Strengthening Basics Plan" majors; 10 national talent training innovation experimental zones; 4 national demonstration professional degree graduate joint training bases. It was selected as one of the first national future technology college construction units, the first national energy storage technology industry-education integration innovation platform, the first national innovation and entrepreneurship college, the national doctoral graduate education comprehensive reform pilot university, the first degree authorization independent review unit, and the first engineering master and doctoral training reform special pilot university, forming a full-chain talent training system for scientific research, industry-education integration, innovation and entrepreneurship. The three fields of energy storage technology, new materials and biomedical devices have been approved for the national urgently needed high-level talent training projects. More than 60% of graduates choose to make contributions to the national key industry regions, industry fields and unit regions. The university adheres to the development concept of "strengthening engineering, strengthening science, promoting literature, and developing medicine", and has formed a comprehensive discipline layout with obvious advantages in engineering, integration of science and engineering, and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as economics, management, literature, law, medicine, education, and art. There are 74 undergraduate majors, 47 first-level discipline master's programs, 34 first-level discipline doctoral programs, and 30 postdoctoral research mobile stations. 14 disciplines are in the top 1% of ESI, of which 4 are in the top 1/1000 of ESI, and the engineering discipline is in the top 1/10000. Facing national strategies, basic frontiers and emerging fields, 13 interdisciplinary platforms are cultivated and built, and the Tianjin University Interdisciplinary Center is established to further promote the "Tianzhi Plan". The "Tianjin Collaborative Innovation Center for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering" led by the university has become one of the first 14 "2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers" in the country. Continuously deepen the cross-integration of medicine and engineering, and there are currently 13 affiliated hospitals and medical centers. The university has strong scientific research strength, and has always focused on the major strategic needs of the country and the forefront of world science and technology development, and has achieved fruitful results. Since 2016, it has won 22 national science and technology awards and 125 national key research and development plan projects, forming a number of high-level achievements such as yeast long chromosome synthesis, internal combustion engine compound cycle theory and methods, "Haiyan" hybrid drive underwater glider, water conservancy engineering intelligent simulation and intelligent construction, brain-computer interface chips, etc. Build the first batch of national excellent traditional Chinese cultural inheritance bases; the "Tianjin Guidelines for the Code of Conduct for Biosafety Scientists" led by the Biosafety Strategic Research Center has been listed as a global biosafety code of ethics by the World Health Organization. The university has a total of 5 national (national) key laboratories, 3 national engineering (technology) research centers, 3 national international science and technology cooperation bases, and 106 provincial and ministerial key scientific research platforms such as the Ministry of Education and Tianjin Key Laboratories. The university insists on opening up to the world and deepening international exchanges and cooperation in all aspects. It has established cooperative relations with 260 universities, research institutes and companies in 50 countries and regions. It has co-established the "Tianjin University Georgia Institute of Technology Shenzhen College" with Georgia Institute of Technology, and co-established the "Tianjin University-National University of Singapore Fuzhou Joint College" with the National University of Singapore. It initiated the establishment of the "China-ASEAN Engineering University Alliance" and the "China-CEEC Science and Technology Innovation University Alliance", established the "China-ASEAN Smart Ocean Education Center" and the "International Energy Cooperation Agency-APEC Sustainable Energy Center", and co-established the Sino-French Cultural Heritage and Urban Research Center in Tianjin with the French Embassy in China. The National "Belt and Road" Humanities and Talent Development Research Center is located in our school. Strengthen the internationalization of talent training, 11 majors have passed international professional certification; vigorously implement the "Study Abroad in Tianjin University" project, and the number of international students is more than 2,000. The School of Pharmacy was selected into the first batch of the "National International Demonstration College Promotion Plan for Colleges". The Confucius Institute in Bratislava, Slovakia and the Confucius Institute at the University of Queensland, Australia were established overseas. The Confucius Institute in Bratislava was rated as a "advanced Confucius Institute" in the world.
