Tianjin University of Technology is a multidisciplinary university with engineering as its main discipline, combining engineering and science, and with coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature, and art. The school was formerly known as Tianjin Institute of Technology. In 1979, it began to recruit undergraduate students under the name of Tianjin University of Science and Technology Branch. It was officially established in 1981 with the approval of the State Council. In 1996, the former Tianjin Institute of Technology merged with the three undergraduate colleges of the former Tianjin University Branch, Tianjin University Mechanical and Electrical Branch, and Tianjin University Metallurgical Branch to form the new Tianjin Institute of Technology. With the approval of the Ministry of Education, it was renamed Tianjin University of Technology in 2004. The school is located at No. 391, Binshui West Road, Xiqing District, Tianjin, with a total area of 1.5993 million square meters and a building area of 761,700 square meters. There are 28,710 full-time students above the undergraduate level. There are 15 professional colleges, as well as institutions such as the School of Continuing Education, the Engineering Training Center, and the Department of Physical Education. There are 68 undergraduate majors, 4 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees (Materials Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Management Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering), 22 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees and 13 master's professional degree authorization points, and 4 first-level discipline postdoctoral research mobile stations (Materials Science and Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Management Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering). The disciplines of chemistry, materials science, engineering, and computer science are among the "top 1% in the ESI global rankings". Two disciplines, materials science and engineering, and computer science and technology, have been shortlisted for cultivation and construction in the Tianjin Universities Top Discipline Cultivation Plan; three disciplines, materials science and engineering, computer science and technology, and management science and engineering, have been shortlisted as Tianjin's first-class disciplines; nine Tianjin universities have established characteristic discipline clusters for serving industries, such as network security and data intelligence; 11 Tianjin characteristic disciplines (clusters), such as machine vision and intelligent computing, have been established; and 12 Tianjin key disciplines have been approved (computer science and technology, materials science and engineering, management science and engineering, electronic science and technology, chemical engineering and technology, control science and engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science and engineering, cyberspace security, and physics). The school has been approved to build 22 national first-class undergraduate majors, 4 specialty majors of the Ministry of Education, 2 comprehensive reform pilot projects of the Ministry of Education's "Undergraduate Teaching Project", and 5 majors of the Ministry of Education's Excellence Plan; it has built 2 national experimental teaching demonstration centers, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching center, 1 national virtual simulation experimental teaching project, 3 national engineering practice education centers, and 2 national "Undergraduate Teaching Project" college students' off-campus practical education base construction projects; it has compiled 14 national-level high-quality and planned textbooks, approved 11 national first-class undergraduate courses, 3 high-quality video open courses of the Ministry of Education and national high-quality resource sharing courses, and won 8 national teaching achievement awards. The school actively promotes the reform of engineering education, and 16 majors have passed the professional certification of engineering education. The school has built a college student activity center, a gymnasium, a track and field stadium, etc., with complete supporting facilities. The library has a construction area of 46,000 square meters, with more than 2.199 million paper books, 1.256 million electronic books, 34,000 electronic journals, and more than 60 high-level databases in Chinese and foreign languages. The university focuses on the construction of scientific and technological innovation platforms. There are 1 national engineering laboratory, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 international cooperation joint research laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 1 demonstration base for innovative talent training of the Ministry of Science and Technology, 1 joint innovation and intelligence introduction base of the Ministry of Education of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, and 1 base for the transformation and technology transfer of scientific and technological achievements of higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education. It has been selected as a national intellectual property pilot university; there are 25 key laboratories, engineering centers, humanities and social science bases, and various think tanks in Tianjin. It takes the lead in building the "Xiqing University Science and Technology Park" in Tianjin, implements the strategy of strengthening the university through science and technology, and promotes self-reliance in science and technology. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 300 major, key, outstanding, excellent, key research and development projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, key research and development projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, military-civilian integration and various national projects, invested more than 1.1 billion yuan in research and development funds, and won a series of national and provincial science and technology awards. The Nature Index ranks among the top 100 universities in the country. In the past five years, the school has transformed 2,052 scientific and technological achievements of various types, with a total amount of 1.074 billion yuan. The school has a strong faculty. There are 2,052 faculty members, including 1,579 full-time teachers, 934 teachers with doctoral degrees, and 860 teachers with senior professional titles. There are 20 national leading talents such as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, national outstanding young scientists, national excellent young scientists, national candidates for the 100,000 Talents Project, and national famous teachers, 136 provincial and ministerial talents such as Tianjin Outstanding Jinmen Scholars, Tianjin Distinguished Professors, Tianjin Special Support Plan Candidates, and Tianjin "131" Innovative Talent Training Project First Level Candidates, and 19 high-level innovation teams, providing strong talent support for the development of the school. The school vigorously implements the internationalization strategy. It has established friendly cooperative relations with 140 well-known universities and research institutions in 36 countries and regions; it has carried out cooperative education at the undergraduate and graduate levels with universities in Canada, Japan and other countries, and trained the first batch of project management masters in my country; the "New Energy Materials" Innovation and Talent Introduction Base was selected into the "111 Plan" of the Ministry of Education and the National Foreign Experts; the school was approved as a Chinese government scholarship school for international students in China, and continuously improved the quality of recruitment and training of international students in China, and improved the cross-cultural communication ability of international students through humanized management and diverse campus culture; it has established 2 Confucius Institutes and 1 Confucius Classroom in Poland and Côte d'Ivoire; and it has established the first Luban Workshop built by a general college in Côte d'Ivoire.
