The history of Beijing University of Science and Technology can be traced back to the first mining and metallurgy discipline in modern Chinese history, which was founded by the Beiyang Western Learning School in 1895. In 1952, the school was formed by the mining and metallurgy departments of six famous domestic universities, including Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University) and Tsinghua University, and was named Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Industry. It was the first higher education institution in the iron and steel industry established in New China. In 1960, it was renamed Beijing Iron and Steel Institute and approved as a national key university. In 1984, it became one of the first universities in the country to formally establish a graduate school. In 1988, it was renamed Beijing University of Science and Technology. In May 1997, the school was among the first batch of universities to enter the ranks of the national "211 Project". In 2006, the school became one of the first universities to build an innovation platform for advantageous disciplines in the "985 Project". In 2014, the "Steel Common Technology Collaborative Innovation Center" led by the school, with Beijing University of Science and Technology and Northeastern University as core universities, was successfully selected into the national "2011 Plan". In 2017, the school was selected as a national "Double First-Class" university. In 2018, the school was approved as a university jointly built by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Ministry of Education. At present, the school has developed into a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education, with engineering as the main discipline and coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as engineering, science, management, literature, economics, and law. Over the past 70 years since its establishment, the school has gradually formed the school motto of "seeking truth and innovation", the fine tradition of "rigorous academic style and advocating practice", and the new characteristics of the new era of Beike spirit of "pursuing excellence and daring to be the first", and has trained more than 300,000 talents of various types for the society, many of whom have become the pillars and backbones of the country's politics, economy, science and technology, education and other fields, especially the metallurgical and materials industries. The university currently has 1 national science center, 1 "2011 Plan" collaborative innovation center, 4 national (national) key laboratories (including co-construction), 3 national engineering (technology) research centers (including co-construction), 1 national technology innovation center (co-construction), 2 national science and technology basic conditions platforms, 1 national science and technology resource sharing service platform, 2 national international science and technology cooperation bases, 1 national safety supervision and inspection science and technology support project, 4 National Energy Administration "Horse Racing First" innovation platforms (including co-construction), 73 provincial and ministerial key laboratories, engineering research centers, international cooperation bases, innovation and intelligence introduction bases, etc. In particular, as the first university directly under the Ministry of Education, the university took the lead in building a major national scientific and technological infrastructure-"Major Engineering Materials Service Safety Research and Evaluation Facility", and established the National Materials Service Safety Science Center. The library has a physical collection of more than 2.583 million volumes (items). The academic level of the school's four national first-level key disciplines, metallurgical engineering, materials science and engineering, mining engineering, and history of science and technology, is well-known both at home and abroad (entered the ranks of national world-class disciplines twice in 2017 and 2022).
