The predecessor of Wenshan College was the National Southwest Normal School, which moved south from Zhaotong, Yunnan to Wenshan in February 1947. In April 1984, Wenshan Normal College was established with the approval of the Yunnan Provincial People's Government. Mr. Chu Tunan, former vice chairman of the National People's Congress, inscribed the school It was renamed Wenshan Normal College in 1992. In April 2009, the Ministry of Education approved its upgrade to a full-time general undergraduate college. In 2018, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In 2019, it became a model school for training applied undergraduate talents in Yunnan Province. In May 2022, the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education and the Wenshan Prefecture People's Government signed an agreement to jointly build Wenshan College, making the school the first university in the province to jointly build Wenshan College. At present, the school covers an area of 874.98 acres, with a school building area of 261,300 square meters. The library has a collection of 931,000 paper books and 1.22 million electronic books. The school recruits students from 22 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) across the country, and currently has 14,189 full-time students (12,202 undergraduates and 1,987 junior college students). The comprehensive academic journal "Journal of Wenshan University" is published to the public at home and abroad.
