Wenzhou Medical University is a provincial general institution of higher learning in Zhejiang Province. The school can be traced back to Zhejiang Medical College founded in 1912. In August 1958, Zhejiang Medical College moved from Hangzhou to Wenzhou. It was initially named "Zhejiang Second Medical College" and later named "Wenzhou Medical College" after the location of the school. In 2013, it was renamed "Wenzhou Medical University". In 2015, it became a university jointly established by the Zhejiang Provincial Government, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Education. In 2017, it became a key university in Zhejiang Province. The school began to recruit five-year undergraduate students in 1958 and master's students in 1978. It is one of the first institutions in the country to confer master's degrees and has the right to confer doctoral degrees. There are doctoral programs in clinical medicine, basic medicine, pharmacy, and biomedical engineering, as well as professional doctoral programs in clinical medicine and medical technology, 11 first-level master's programs in clinical medicine, nursing, Chinese medicine, biology, biomedical engineering, basic medicine, integrated Chinese and Western medicine, pharmacy, stomatology, public health and preventive medicine, and public management, and 7 professional master's degree authorization points in clinical medicine, biomedical engineering, stomatology, nursing, pharmacy, public health, and applied psychology; there are first-level postdoctoral research stations in clinical medicine and pharmacy. The school ranks 70th in the ESI global university comprehensive ranking. Ten disciplines, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics, materials science, chemistry, neuroscience and behavior, immunology, engineering, environment and ecology, are in the top 1% of the ESI global ranking, among which clinical medicine and pharmacology and toxicology are in the top 1‰. It has 1 national key laboratory, 1 national engineering technology research center, 1 National Development and Reform Commission engineering research center, 1 provincial and ministerial co-construction national key laboratory, 1 national clinical medicine research center (ophthalmology), 2 Ministry of Education provincial and ministerial co-construction collaborative innovation centers, 1 key laboratory of the State Food and Drug Administration, 2 national international science and technology cooperation bases, 1 national traditional Chinese medicine platform and 41 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms. 1 discipline is identified as a provincial peak discipline; there are 2 provincial advantageous and characteristic disciplines, 4 provincial first-class disciplines of Class A, 6 provincial first-class disciplines of Class B, 2 provincial key construction universities with advantageous and characteristic disciplines, 2 provincial "first-level disciplines of top priority", and 10 provincial universities with key disciplines. The school adheres to the social demand-oriented approach and the people's satisfaction as its purpose, and strives to cultivate outstanding medical talents with feelings, confidence, ability to do things and innovation. The school has 30 undergraduate enrollment majors, 2 "5+3" undergraduate and master's integrated majors, and 1 clinical medicine Sino-foreign cooperative education major. There are 16,040 undergraduate and junior college students (full-time, excluding the independent college - Wenzhou Medical University Renji College), 8,121 graduate students (including 841 doctoral students), and 648 international students for academic education. The school has formed a comprehensive and multi-level talent training system from undergraduates to master's students, doctoral students and postdoctoral students, from full-time to adult education, and education for international students and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The school actively promotes the internationalization of education and has established good communication and cooperation relations with more than 170 universities and educational research institutions at home and abroad, including more than 20 of the world's top 100 universities. It has carried out substantial exchanges and cooperation in student overseas exchanges and joint training, teacher academic exchanges and scientific research cooperation, Sino-foreign cooperative education, and education of international students in China. There are currently several Sino-foreign cooperative education projects, including the Sino-US doctoral graduate education program in optometry, the Sino-Swedish doctoral graduate education program in clinical medicine, the Sino-Thai nursing master's degree education program, and the Sino-Korean doctoral degree education program in pharmacy. In cooperation with the University of Alberta, a world-renowned university, the Alberta College of Wenzhou Medical University is currently the highest-level institution for Sino-foreign cooperative education among medical schools in my country. In cooperation with the Medical University of Lublin in Poland, the first overseas clinical medical education project in my country was held. In cooperation with the College of Optometry of the State University of New York, the first "Chinese + Medicine" project of the Ministry of Education was approved. It was selected as an implementing institution of the "Young Key Teachers' Overseas Training Project" of the China Scholarship Council and an "International Characteristic University in Zhejiang Province". The school currently has three campuses, with a total area of about 1,436 acres. The library has a collection of 2.08 million paper documents and 990,000 electronic documents. The school hosts, edits and publishes 5 academic journals and 1 academic newspaper. Among them, the academic journal "Eye and Vision" has entered the SCIE academic journal, 3 journals have been selected as "China Science and Technology Core Journals", and "Chinese Journal of Optometry and Visual Science" is a series of journals of the Chinese Medical Association. The school has 5 affiliated hospitals, all of which are Class A tertiary hospitals, and 29 non-affiliated affiliated hospitals/teaching hospitals. The Affiliated Eye and Optometry Hospital, the Affiliated First Hospital, and the Affiliated Second Hospital remain in the top 100 of the Chinese Hospital Science and Technology Value Evaluation Ranking, and the Affiliated Eye and Optometry Hospital ranks first among the national ophthalmology specialist hospitals.
