Wuhan Conservatory of Music is the only independent higher music institution in central my country. On November 19, 1953, the Central South Conservatory of Music, which was established by the Central South College of Arts and Literature, the South China People's College of Literature and Art, and the music department of Guangxi Provincial College of Arts, was the starting point of the establishment of Wuhan Conservatory of Music. The school is located on the site of the "Lianghu Academy". The predecessors of the Central South Conservatory of Arts and Literature include Wuchang College of Arts (1930), the College of Arts and Literature of Zhongyuan University (1949), and the Hunan Conservatory of Music (1947); the predecessors of the South China People's College of Literature and Art include Guangdong Provincial College of Arts (1940), Guangzhou Municipal College of Arts (1947) and Hong Kong Chinese Conservatory of Music (1947); the predecessor of the Guangxi Provincial College of Arts is the Guangxi Provincial Capital National Basic School Art Teacher Training Class (1938). Together, they constitute the rich and diverse, profound music education history of Wuhan Conservatory of Music. In 1958, the Central South Conservatory of Music merged with the Department of Music and the Department of Fine Arts of Central China Normal University and the Hubei Mass Art Cadre School to form the Hubei Institute of Arts. In 1985, it was renamed Wuhan Conservatory of Music. The school takes the establishment of morality and education as its fundamental task, and takes the construction of a high-level music college that satisfies the people as its goal. It adheres to the school motto of "establishing morality, self-reliance, respecting culture, and fine arts", adheres to the working principle of "highlighting high-quality party building to lead high-quality development, highlighting the strategic needs of serving the country and Hubei to promote connotative development, improving the quality of talent training, and improving the level of school management" ("two highlights, two improvements"), implements the talent training concept of "morality and art, integration of general and specialized", implements the discipline construction policy of the trinity of artistic creation, artistic performance, and theoretical research, and cultivates high-quality, diversified music and dance professionals and top-notch innovative talents with all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor. The school is one of the first batch of master's degree awarding institutions in the country, one of the first batch of key discipline construction units in Hubei Province, and one of the first batch of domestic first-class discipline construction universities in Hubei Province. Music and dance is one of the first batch of domestic first-class discipline construction disciplines in Hubei Province. There are four master's degree authorization points in the disciplines of art, Marxist theory (ideological and political education), music and dance. There are teaching units such as the School of Marxism, Composition Department, Musicology Department, Chinese Instrumental Music Department, Piano Department, Orchestra Department, Vocal Music Department, Dance Department, School of Music Education, School of Performing Arts, Public Basic Course Department, and Affiliated Middle School. There are educational levels of music affiliated middle school, undergraduate, master's and doctoral students (joint training). The school's National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Music Performance is one of the two national experimental teaching demonstration centers for music in the country. Among the school's 10 undergraduate majors, three majors of music performance, musicology, and recording art are national characteristic majors, and five majors of music performance, musicology, recording art, composition and composition technology theory, and dance performance are national first-class undergraduate major construction points, and the dance choreography major is a provincial first-class undergraduate major construction point. The school has a series of discipline construction and art practice platforms, including the Yangtze River Traditional Music Culture Research Center, a key research base for humanities and social sciences in Hubei universities, the Hubei Collaborative Innovation Center for Music Creation, the Oriental Symphony Orchestra, the Oriental Chinese Orchestra, the Chinese Chime Orchestra, the Oriental Chorus, and the Oriental Dance Troupe. The journal Huangzhong is one of the 10 core Chinese journals in the field of music in China. The school insists on educating people for the Party and the country, innovating talent training mechanisms, improving talent training quality, promoting cultural inheritance and innovation, and serving the economic, social and cultural development of the country and Hubei.
