The predecessor of Xi'an Electric Power College was Xi'an Electric Power School founded in 1953. In 1980, it was established as a national key secondary vocational school by the Ministry of Education. In 1994, it was upgraded to a junior college. In 2007, the Ministry of Education evaluated the talent training level of higher vocational colleges as excellent. In 2008, it became a project unit of the Shaanxi Provincial Demonstration Higher Vocational College Construction Plan. The school bears the dual responsibilities of talent development and general higher vocational education for the State Grid Corporation of China and the State Grid Shaanxi Company. It is the only higher vocational college in the Northwest region for electric power and enjoys the reputation of "Northwest Electric Power Huangpu". The school covers a total area of 404.40 acres, with a total building area of 163,500 square meters for teaching buildings. It has 153 training (experimental) laboratories for power grid operation, power marketing, relay protection, substation maintenance, etc. It has 100 power industry-specific jobs authorized by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of China and 92 job skills appraisal qualifications authorized by the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security. In recent years, the school has focused on national policies and the development strategy of the State Grid Corporation of China, with the mission of serving local economic and social development and the development of the power grid, and with the goal of creating a "distinctive and first-class" higher vocational college. It highlights the school-running characteristics of "rooting in electricity, integrating school and enterprise to educate people", innovates the "school-enterprise cooperation" talent training model, and improves the curriculum system based on work processes or typical work tasks. Strive to explore the new era of power talent training models with Chinese characteristics of production-education integration and school-enterprise cooperation. 9 majors were rated as provincial key majors, 4 majors were included in the provincial first-class professional cultivation projects, 8 courses were rated as provincial quality courses, and 3 teaching teams were identified as Shaanxi general colleges and universities teaching teams. 6 teachers have been rated as Shaanxi Province General Colleges and Universities Teaching Masters, 1 teacher was rated as a model of teaching and educating people in Shaanxi Province, and 1 teacher was rated as a model of higher education in Shaanxi Province. Students have won awards in competitions such as the National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition, the Electronic Design Competition, and the China-Australia Cooperative Schooling Skills Competition. The school's educational achievements have been highly recognized by the national power industry, the State Grid Corporation system, and all sectors of society. In 2007, it was recognized by the China Electricity Council as a high-skilled talent training base for the power industry. In 2008, it became a project unit of the Shaanxi Provincial Demonstration Higher Vocational College Construction Plan. In 2010, it became a high-skilled talent training base for the State Grid Corporation. In 2012, it was awarded the National Vocational Skills Training Base by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions. In 2013, it was awarded the Power Industry Simulation Training Base by the China Electricity Council. It was successively awarded the "Advanced Collective of the State Grid Corporation" in 2010 and 2016, and won the Fifth National Civilized Unit in 2017. In 2018, it was selected as one of the "Top 50 Chinese Corporate Universities". In 2020, it won the Outstanding Contribution Award for the Cultivation of Skilled Talents in the National Power Industry. It has successively become the supporting unit of the State Grid Corporation Shaanxi Training Center, the State Grid Corporation Technical College Xi'an Branch and other institutions.
