The predecessor of Xinghai Conservatory of Music was Guangzhou Music School founded in October 1957; it was established as Guangzhou Music College in September 1958; it merged with Guangdong Dance School to form Guangdong Art College in January 1966; it merged with Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in October 1970 It was the Guangdong People's Art Institute; in March 1978, it was renamed Guangzhou Music College; in June 1981, it was approved by the State Council and was established as Guangzhou Conservatory of Music; in December 1985, it was renamed Xinghai Conservatory of Music in memory of People's Musician Xian Xinghai. The school currently has two campuses, Guangzhou University Town Campus and Shahe Campus, covering an area of 186,292 square meters. The school has 20 teaching departments and 1 affiliated secondary music school (attached middle school).
