Xinjiang Light Industry Vocational and Technical College was founded in 1958 and was restructured into a higher vocational and technical college at the junior college level in June 2000. It is one of the first batch of higher vocational colleges in Xinjiang and is affiliated to the Department of Industry and Information Technology of the Autonomous Region. The college is one of the 100 national backbone demonstration higher vocational colleges, a national high-quality higher vocational school, one of the top 50 service contributions of higher vocational colleges in the country, the "first batch of vocational education moral education experimental bases" of the Ministry of Education, and the chairman unit of the Xinjiang Secondary Industry Vocational Education Park. When Premier Li Keqiang visited the college in March 2010, he praised: "The secondary industry park is well run, the school is well run, and it is very distinctive." In December 2019, the college was identified by the Ministry of Education as a construction unit of high-level majors (groups) with Chinese characteristics, and applied chemical technology was identified as a high-level major (group) in China. The college currently has 16,000 students and 659 faculty members, including 494 full-time teachers, 203 with doctoral and master's degrees, and 133 with associate senior titles or above; there are 43 permanent enrollment majors and 4 national and autonomous region-level training bases; the college currently has 1 national-level teacher innovation team, 7 autonomous region-level teaching teams, 9 national and autonomous region teaching masters, 6 autonomous region vocational skills masters, and 4 autonomous region teaching experts; 1 national-level quality course and 18 autonomous region-level quality courses have been established. In the past three years, students have won 17 awards in national skill competitions and 63 awards in autonomous region-level skill competitions. The college firmly adheres to the socialist direction of running schools, adheres to the school-running philosophy of "combining work and study, unity of knowledge and action" and the school-running positioning of "based in Xinjiang, focusing on southern Xinjiang, facing the secondary industry, and serving the development of Xinjiang and consolidating the border", forming a professional group system of food, chemical, textile, electromechanical, etc., and has trained a group of highly skilled technical talents urgently needed for Xinjiang's economic and social development.
