Yan'an University is the first comprehensive university founded by the Communist Party of China and named by Comrade Mao Zedong. It is now a university jointly established by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, a high-level university in Shaanxi Province, a first-class enrollment institution in Shaanxi Province, a recommended institution for excellent undergraduate graduates to study for a master's degree without examination, and a local special training institution for the "Excellent Teacher Plan". The school was founded in September 1941, and its history can be traced back to the Shaanxi Public School founded in 1937. In July 1941, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee decided at two meetings that the Shaanxi Public School, China Women's University, and Zedong Youth Cadre School would be merged to form Yan'an University, with Wu Yuzhang as the first president. Later, from 1943 to 1944, Lu Xun Academy of Arts and Literature, Academy of Natural Sciences, New Characters Cadre School, Nationalities College, and Administrative College were successively merged into Yan'an University. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, according to the deployment of the CPC Central Committee, most of Yan'an University moved to Northeast China, North China and other places to run schools, and promoted the new education of new democracy to the whole country. In March 1947, the remaining departments of Yan'an University moved to Shaanxi, Gansu and Shanxi to run schools, and moved back to Yan'an to resume regular schooling in July 1948. In June 1949, the Northwest Bureau of the CPC Central Committee decided to change the name of Yan'an University to Northwest People's Revolutionary University and move to Xi'an. In March 1953, the Northwest Bureau decided to change the Northwest People's Revolutionary University to Northwest Political and Legal Cadre School, and the classes were merged with Northwest Normal University, Northwest Nationalities University, Northwest Party School, Political and Legal Cadre School and other Northwest colleges. In September 1958, in order to meet the needs of economic and social development in the old areas of northern Shaanxi, the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the CPC and the Shaanxi People's Committee decided to restore and rebuild Yan'an University in Yan'an. Yan'an University, which once laid the foundation and spread the seeds of new education, resumed schooling in Yangjialing, the former site of the CPC Central Committee. In 1998, Yan'an Medical College, Yan'an People's Hospital and Yan'an University merged to form the new Yan'an University, which was listed as a key university in Shaanxi Province. In 2005, the university was listed as a university jointly established by the Shaanxi Provincial People's Government and the Ministry of Education, and in 2011 it was listed as a high-level university in Shaanxi Province. In the 86 years since its establishment, the development of the university has always been highly valued and cared for by successive party and state leaders and all sectors of society. On May 24, 1944, Comrade Mao Zedong personally attended the opening ceremony of Yan'an University and delivered an important speech. In April 1966, Deng Xiaoping and Li Fuchun visited Yan'an and met with some teachers and students of the university. On September 10, 1998, Jiang Zemin wrote an inscription for the 60th anniversary of the founding of Yan'an University: "Use the Yan'an spirit to run schools and educate people, and cultivate talents for the development of science and education". On May 24, 2004, Hu Jintao made an important instruction to Yan'an University, requiring all parties to "jointly support the establishment of Yan'an University". On September 19, 2017, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Yan'an University, General Secretary Xi Jinping made an important instruction, "On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of Yan'an University, I would like to extend my warm congratulations to all teachers and students. For a long time, Yan'an University has adhered to the educational concept of serving the public and applying what it has learned, and has cultivated a batch of outstanding talents, making important contributions to national liberation, revolutionary victory and the construction of old revolutionary base areas. I hope you will not forget your original intention, continue to move forward, carry forward the Yan'an spirit, be brave in reform and innovation, and make this university with a glorious history more distinctive and more advanced." In September 2022, on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the founding of the school, General Secretary Xi Jinping extended cordial congratulations and greetings to the school. This has pointed out the direction for the development of the school and injected strong impetus. In recent years, Vice Premier Liu Yandong, Vice Premier Han Zheng, and Vice Premier Sun Chunlan have successively visited the school and expressed their concern for the construction and development of the school through inspections and instructions. The school currently has three campuses in Xincheng, Yangjialing, and Cuiyuan, covering an area of more than 2,800 acres and a total construction area of 1.08 million square meters. There are more than 20,000 students and more than 1,600 faculty and staff. The school has 16 secondary colleges, 1 independent college, 1 directly affiliated hospital, and 10 non-directly affiliated hospitals; there are 18 first-level master's degree authorization points, 14 professional degree authorization categories; 6 provincial advantageous and characteristic disciplines, 1 provincial first-class discipline; 59 undergraduate majors, 12 national first-class professional construction points, 13 provincial first-class professional construction points; 25 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms, 19 provincial and ministerial innovation teams, 7 academician workstations, and 3 social science masters' studios. In recent years, the university has adhered to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, kept in mind the earnest instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping, closely followed the general goal of "running with more characteristics and higher standards", and benchmarked the general requirements of "carrying forward the Yan'an spirit and daring to reform and innovate". It has formulated the "Implementation Opinions on Implementing the Important Instructions of General Secretary Xi Jinping to Promote the Construction of High-level Universities", clarified the goals and tasks of "highlighting the four characteristics and improving the five levels" and the work measures of "using the Yan'an spirit to cultivate souls and educate people, and using reform and innovation to enhance motivation". All undertakings have achieved new results at a new starting point, and the construction of a more distinctive and higher-level university has reached a new level. The school has established the talent training goal positioning of "Yan'an Spirit Characteristics" (firm belief, truth-seeking and pragmatism, courage to take responsibility, willingness to contribute, and good at innovation), and has constructed a Yan'an spirit "one body and two wings" soul-building and education system with classroom teaching as the main body and experience activities and practice activities as the two wings, promoting the transformation of Yan'an spirit education from "knowledge" and "feelings" to "intention" and "action", forming a full-staff, all-round, and full-process Yan'an spirit education pattern. The educational achievements of the Yan'an spirit have won one national teaching achievement award and three provincial teaching achievement special awards. The "Little Red Expert" project was selected as the first batch of high-quality projects for ideological and political work in colleges and universities by the Ministry of Education and won the national silver award in the "Internet +" competition. In recent years, nourished by the Yan'an spirit, many students have actively participated in large-scale activities such as the prevention and control of the new crown epidemic and volunteer services for the "14th National Games". Assisting Xinjiang and Tibet and enlisting in the army have become popular, and the rate of admission to targeted selection ranks among the best in the province. All walks of life and employers evaluate Yanda graduates: "solid foundation, honesty, pragmatic style, down-to-earth work", "down to earth, reliable, and useful". The school has organized and implemented the "Talent Training Quality Improvement Project". A large number of courses have been selected as national and provincial first-class undergraduate courses and provincial high-quality online open courses. It has been approved for provincial major education reform projects, key projects, provincial excellent teaching achievement awards, and provincial excellent teaching material awards. The number of provincial and above experimental teaching demonstration centers, pilot colleges for innovation and entrepreneurship education reform, and innovation and entrepreneurship education practice bases has achieved new growth. Students have repeatedly set new records in international awards and national awards, and for the first time, they independently formed a team to participate in the International Genetic Engineering Machine Competition (iGEM) and won the silver medal. The scientific research capabilities of students have been continuously improved, and a number of advanced models have emerged who have published communication papers in journals such as "Nature" and "The Lancet". The school insists on taking discipline construction as the leader, organizing and implementing the "First-Class Discipline Construction Project", cultivating and forming five characteristic disciplines such as Marxist theory and the history of "The CPC Central Committee in Yan'an for Thirteen Years", and the engineering discipline has entered the top 1% of ESI worldwide, and has been listed as a "new doctoral degree awarding unit project construction unit" in Shaanxi Province. One provincial "first-class discipline" discipline has been approved. Six master's first-level disciplines and nine professional degree categories have been added. The school organized and implemented the "First-class Teacher Introduction and Cultivation Plan"The "Implementation Plan for the Yan'an Spirit to Forge the Soul of Teachers" was implemented. Two teams were selected as "National Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams" and one team was selected as "Provincial Huang Danian-style Teacher Team". A major breakthrough was achieved in the construction of high-level talents, and the proportion of doctoral teachers increased significantly. Many secondary units and many teachers were commended for their teacher ethics at the national and provincial levels. The school was approved as the Shaanxi Provincial Teacher Ethics Education Practice Base, and a group of advanced models such as Lei Xin, the "National Model Teacher", emerged. The school organized and implemented the "Governance System and Governance Capacity Modernization Improvement Project", adhered to and improved the "One Chapter and Eight Systems", revised the "Yan'an University Charter", and promoted the "abolition, modification, establishment, and interpretation" of the system on a regular basis. Comprehensive reforms such as the new era education evaluation reform, personnel appointment system reform, teacher professional title evaluation system reform, school-college two-level management system reform, medical and educational collaborative development system mechanism reform, and logistics management system reform have been implemented, and the governance system and governance capacity of modern universities have been continuously improved. The school organized and implemented the "Foreign Exchange and Cooperation Efficiency Plan", and cooperated to establish the "Yanhe University Talent Training Alliance", "Red Medical Alliance", Yan'an University Rural Development Research Institute, Yan'an Thirteen Years and Chinese Modernization Research Institute, Yan'an Carbon Neutrality Research Institute; signed cooperation agreements with 73 universities and research institutes, signed strategic cooperation agreements with more than 100 companies such as Yanchang Petroleum Group, and established inter-school cooperation with 50 universities in more than 20 countries and regions, and established diversified and multi-level learning and exchange programs. The school was listed as an implementing institution for the overseas training program for young backbone teachers of the National Scholarship Fund Committee and a qualified institution for enrollment in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Yan'an University is the new era Yan'an Spirit Communication Center. The school pays attention to the role of the Yan'an Spirit as a "radiation source" and insists on expanding and strengthening red education and training. In recent years, more than 1,700 training courses have been held for universities, party and government agencies, enterprises and institutions inside and outside the province, and more than 90,000 trainees have been trained. At present, the school is guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and fully implements the spirit of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech and important instructions during his inspection in Shaanxi.
