Yanbian University was founded in 1949. It is one of the earliest universities established by the Communist Party of China in ethnic minority areas. It is located in Yanji City and Hunchun City, Yanbian Korean Autonomous Prefecture, Jilin Province, which enjoys the reputation of "Hometown of Education". It is a national "Double First-Class" construction university, a national "211 Project" key construction university, a key construction university for western development, a university jointly supported by the People's Government of Jilin Province and the Ministry of Education, and a university jointly supported by the People's Government of Jilin Province and the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. The school adheres to the school motto of "seeking truth, perfection, and integration" and the school spirit of "self-reliance, harmony, and constant innovation", carries forward the fine tradition of "hard work, pioneering, inheriting culture, highlighting characteristics, national unity, teaching and learning together, extensive exchanges, and multilateral cooperation", deeply implements the new strategies and new measures for the transformation and development of the school, and continuously promotes the school's connotation-based high-quality development. The school covers an area of 1.4 million square meters and the school building area is 800,000 square meters. The school library has a collection of 1.8896 million paper books of various types. The university currently has 17 colleges and 74 undergraduate majors; there are 10 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 31 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 24 master's professional degree authorization categories, and 5 independently set interdisciplinary disciplines; there are 5 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 1 postdoctoral research workstation, and 7 Jilin Province graduate workstations. In 2017 and 2022, the discipline of foreign languages and literature was successively selected as a national "double first-class" construction discipline. In addition, the university has 1 national key discipline, 15 Jilin Province characteristic high-level disciplines, 3 key disciplines of the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, 2 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and 15 school-level key disciplines. The university currently has 2,229 faculty and staff, including 1,366 full-time teachers, 808 of whom have doctoral degrees, 506 have master's degrees, and 765 have associate senior titles or above. More than 100 famous experts from home and abroad, including Jin Ningyi, Chen Fener, and Zhang Yong, were hired to launch the "Tumen River Scholars Support Program" to strengthen the construction of a high-level talent team, cultivate and introduce a group of discipline leaders and young academic backbones with great development potential. The school currently has 29,086 full-time students (including 6,194 doctoral and master's students, 21,104 undergraduates, and 1,788 junior college students), and 62 international students from 13 countries. There are 38 scientific research institutions at or above the provincial and ministerial levels, including the Ministry of Education Engineering Research Center for Science and Technology Innovation of Beef Cattle in the Cold Regions of Northeast China, the Ministry of Education's Key Research Base for Humanities and Social Sciences-North Korea and South Korea Research Center, the Ministry of Education's Key Laboratory of Natural Medicine Research in Changbai Mountain, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs' Yanbian Characteristic High-quality Beef Deep Processing Innovation Key Laboratory, actively creating the Tumen River Forum and Changbai Mountain Forum, two international academic forum brands. In the past three years, the school has undertaken a total of 586 major key projects and fund projects at the national and provincial levels, and published 4,358 academic papers. The school adheres to the internationalization strategy and has established cooperation and exchange relations with 277 colleges and universities, scientific research institutions or international academic organizations in 31 countries and regions. Steadily develop the education of international students and obtain the qualification of receiving "Chinese Government Scholarship International Students" from the Ministry of Education. Strengthen the construction of "Yanbian University Chinese and Foreign Language and Cultural Exchange and Cooperation Center". It has established inter-school relations with world-renowned universities such as the Far Eastern Federal University of Russia, Meiji University of Japan, Seoul University of South Korea, Kim Il Sung University of North Korea, Stockholm University of Sweden, and University of Pittsburgh of the United States, with nearly a thousand experts and scholars exchanging visits each year.
