Yuncheng University originated from the Yuncheng Teachers College Class of Shanxi Normal University established in 1978, and was later renamed Yuncheng Teachers College; in 1989, it merged with Yuncheng Regional Education College and Hedong University (under preparation) to form Yuncheng Higher Vocational College. In 2002, it was upgraded to Yuncheng University with the approval of the Ministry of Education; in 2017, it was established as a master's degree authorization project construction unit by the Shanxi Provincial People's Government Degree Committee and the Provincial Department of Education; in 2021, it was established as the first batch of applied undergraduate colleges and universities in Shanxi Province. The school is located in Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province (formerly known as Hedong), one of the important birthplaces of Chinese civilization.
