Yunnan Vocational College of Culture and Art was founded in 1956 and is the first provincial public art vocational college in Yunnan Province. The school has been established for nearly 70 years and has gone through the historical periods of Yunnan Provincial School of Culture and Art Cadres, Yunnan Provincial Opera School, Yunnan Provincial Literature and Art School, and Yunnan Provincial Art School. In September 2001, Yunnan Art School merged with Yunnan Film School to form the new Yunnan Art School; in May 2004, Yunnan Art School merged with Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture Staff University to form Yunnan Vocational College of Culture and Art, with the goal of cultivating practical middle and high-level cultural and artistic talents. In 2006, due to the special needs of cultivating artistic talents, the college was approved by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education to restore and add the sign of "Yunnan Art School", retaining secondary art education and forming an integrated school-running pattern of colleges and technical secondary schools. The school has been recognized by relevant departments as: Yunnan Province's ethnic minority art talent training base, Yunnan Province's intangible cultural heritage (Yunnan Opera, Lanterns) inheritance base, Yunnan Chinese education base, Yunnan's key backbone colleges for ethnic cultural inheritance and innovation, and national vocational colleges. Demonstration majors for ethnic cultural inheritance and innovation, Yunnan Province's second batch of modern apprenticeship pilot colleges (opera performance, acrobatics and magic performance, fine arts and applied fine arts, and film and television fine arts are four provincial pilot projects for modern apprenticeship), Yunnan Province's school-enterprise co-construction productive training base demonstration college, Yunnan Province's entrepreneurship and employment typical experience college; in 2016 and 2017, it was listed in the top 50 Chinese higher vocational colleges with international influence for two consecutive years; in 2021, it was approved as a provincial high-level school cultivation unit, and the dance performance professional group was approved as a provincial A-level high-level professional group construction project. Over the years since its establishment, the college has attracted and gathered a large number of famous artists to teach here, and has cultivated outstanding artistic talents represented by Li Xincao, president of the China Conservatory of Music and famous conductor, Tao Chun, executive director of the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, Xiao Xuejun, vice president of the Central Conservatory of Music, Rong Baxinna, annual champion of CCTV's Avenue of Stars, Wang Yuzhen, Hu Chunhua, Chen Yaping, winners of the National Opera Plum Blossom Award, and Wang Runmei, winner of the National Opera Red Plum Award. It is known as the "cradle of artists on the red soil plateau". The college currently has 7 secondary colleges including the School of Opera, the School of Performing Arts, the School of Music, the School of Design and Media, the School of Culture and Tourism, the School of Education, and the School of Radio and Television, as well as 3 teaching entities including the School of Marxism, the Center for General Education, and the School of Continuing Education. The school and enterprises jointly built the "Yang Liping Cultural and Art Industry College" and the "Education Industry College". The college has a group of well-known artists, famous teachers, skill masters and studios of famous teachers and skill masters in the country and the province. There are 3 people who enjoy special allowances from the Yunnan Provincial Government, 1 Yunnan cultural master, 3 provincial teaching masters, and 4 provincial skill masters. The teachers and students of the college have repeatedly achieved good results in national and provincial vocational college skill competitions, college student art performances, and youth actor competitions, and have been selected for the National Art Fund Project for three consecutive years. It is the only college in the country that offers acrobatics majors at the college level, and the only college in Yunnan that provides "order-based" talent training to various art troupes. It has successively carried out order-based school-enterprise cooperation talent training with many well-known industries (enterprises) such as Yunnan Song and Dance Theater, Yunnan Lantern Theater, Yunnan Dian Opera Theater, Yunnan Acrobatic Troupe, China's first performing arts stock Hangzhou Songcheng Group, OCT, Yunnan Quezhilian Education Investment Group Co., Ltd., and Blue Ocean Waves Cultural Technology Co., Ltd., providing basic talent support for the prosperity and development of Yunnan's cultural and artistic undertakings. The college actively integrates into the service of the Yunnan Frontier National Unity Demonstration Zone, the radiation center facing South Asia and Southeast Asia, and the national "Belt and Road" construction, and carries out high-end art into the campus, cultural caravans, hundreds of groups and thousands of red light cavalry, and poverty alleviation and benefit performances with the "Southeast Asian Art Troupe" and "Experimental Acrobatic Troupe". It has successively received art education delegations from Europe, America, South Asia and Southeast Asian countries to visit the school for exchanges, sent teachers and students to participate in cultural and artistic exchange activities abroad, and received short-term education for international students from South Asia, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and other regions.
