A century-old institution, timeless and new. Zhaotong University is a provincial public undergraduate university. Its teacher education tradition can be traced back to the Normal School founded by the Qing government in 1906. It has gone through the Provincial Second Normal School and Zhaotong Regional Normal School. In 1978, Zhaotong Normal College was established. In 1992, it was renamed Zhaotong Normal College. In 1999, it merged with Zhaotong Education College and Yunnan TV University Zhaotong Branch. In 2000, it merged with Zhaotong Regional Normal School. In 2012, it was upgraded to an undergraduate college and named Zhaotong University; in 2021, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the Ministry of Education; in 2022, it was included in the key support colleges of the Ministry of Education's teacher education collaborative quality improvement plan; in 2023, it became a university jointly built by the Yunnan Provincial Department of Education and the Zhaotong Municipal People's Government.
