The predecessor of the school was founded by Zhejiang University and Hangzhou City in 1980. In November 2023, it was approved by the Ministry of Education and renamed Zhejiang University of Science and Technology. After more than 40 years of construction, it has developed into a first-class applied provincial undergraduate university with internationalized education and distinctive regional characteristics. The school has two campuses. The Xiaoheshan Campus is located in Xihu District, Hangzhou, adjacent to the Xixi Wetland. The campus covers an area of more than 1,900 acres and a building area of about 470,000 square meters; the Anji Campus is located in Anji, Huzhou, the birthplace of the concept of "Green Water and Green Mountains are Gold and Silver Mountains". The land area is more than 1,000 acres and the building area is about 170,000 square meters. The school has 17 secondary colleges and 1 teaching department; there are 57 undergraduate majors, 6 academic master's degree authorized first-level disciplines, and 8 master's professional degree authorization points; there are more than 19,600 full-time undergraduates and graduate students, and more than 1,200 international students of various types; the total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is about 500 million yuan, and there are more than 2 million paper-based applicable books. The school has a team of outstanding talents with international vision, high academic level, noble teacher ethics and reasonable echelon structure. There are 1,693 faculty members and 1,380 full-time teachers, including more than 540 teachers with senior professional titles, 56% of teachers with doctoral degrees, 32% of teachers with more than 6 months of overseas academic experience, and nearly 50% of teachers with engineering practice backgrounds; there is 1 Zhejiang Provincial Special Expert, 20 national talents such as the leader of the "Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Team Development Program", the National High-level Talent Special Support Program, the National Hundred Thousand Talents Project, and the National Young and Middle-aged Experts with Outstanding Contributions, and nearly 120 provincial and ministerial talents. The school currently has 7 provincial first-class disciplines in the "14th Five-Year Plan", 14 provincial and ministerial scientific research innovation platforms and think tanks such as provincial key laboratories, provincial international science and technology cooperation bases, and national and regional research centers of the Ministry of Education. It has co-built a research center with the Industrial Culture Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 3 Zhejiang Provincial Key Science and Technology Innovation Teams, 2 Provincial University Science and Technology Innovation Teams, and cooperated with local governments to build local research institutes and 19 technology transfer and transformation centers. In recent years, the school has won more than 40 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels and above, including 2 national science and technology awards and 9 provincial science and technology awards. For a long time, the school has been committed to building a new modern applied university with "German model and Chinese characteristics", adhering to the school motto of "respecting morality, advocating practicality, seeking truth, and innovation", adhering to the educational concept of "applying what you have learned and developing in an all-round way", aiming to create a "cradle of excellent engineers", actively carrying out education and teaching reforms and practices, and cultivating high-quality applied talents with practical ability, innovative spirit, international literacy and social responsibility. The school is a pilot institution for Sino-German cooperation in cultivating high-level applied talents determined by the Ministry of Education, the first batch of universities to implement the "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Program" of the Ministry of Education, a selected school for the "National College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program", and a university under the construction of the "National 13th Five-Year Plan" Education Modernization Promotion Project-Industry-Education Integration Development Project", and is the leading unit of the Zhejiang Digital Manufacturing Industry-Education Integration Alliance. There are 7 national practical teaching platforms, 30 provincial and ministerial practical teaching platforms such as the Ministry of Education's Industry-Education Integration Innovation Base, 9 national majors such as national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 33 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 8 majors have passed the China Engineering Education Professional Certification, and 3 majors have passed the German Professional Certification Committee. There are 156 national and provincial first-class undergraduate courses and 60 national, provincial and ministerial textbooks (projects). In the past two sessions, it has won 3 national teaching achievement awards, 1 national excellent textbook award, 1 provincial first prize for teaching achievements, and 6 provincial second prizes for teaching achievements. The school has achieved remarkable results in international and domestic subject competitions. In the past five years, it has won more than 5,700 provincial and above awards, including more than 1,800 national and above awards and more than 3,800 provincial awards. The student subject competition ranked 139th in the single-year ranking of national college subject competitions in 2021. The employment rate and salary level of graduates are among the top universities in Zhejiang Province, and the school has been rated as a "national university with typical graduate employment experience" by the Ministry of Education. The school insists on the path of internationalization, always regards international exchanges and cooperation as an important strategy for the development of the school, and has formed a distinctive internationalized school-running feature. The school is one of the first batch of universities with quality certification for studying abroad in China by the Ministry of Education, a base construction unit of the "China-Germany Forum", a member unit of the China-Central and Eastern European Countries University Association, a member unit of the Silk Road Business School Alliance, and the first batch of "Zhejiang Province Internationalized Characteristic Universities". It is one of the first batch of "Silk Road" Chinese Government Scholarship Universities, a university funded by the National Scholarship Fund for Young Key Teachers to Study Abroad, and a university that recruits Chinese Government Scholarship Students to Study in China. The overall level of internationalization of the school ranks among the top universities authorized for master and doctoral degrees in Zhejiang Province, and ranks among the top 50 in the international competitiveness rankings of Chinese public universities. The school has established exchanges and cooperation relations with 152 universities (institutions) in countries (territories) such as Germany, France, the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, Belgium, Romania, etc., and has 190 cooperation and exchange projects of various types. Especially in the Sino-German cooperation, it has a long history and fruitful results, becoming an important window for Zhejiang Province and even the whole country to exchange and cooperate with Germany in education, science and technology, and culture. German Chancellor Merkel praised the achievements of the school's Sino-German cooperation during the G20 Hangzhou Summit. Former German Presidents Herzog and Wulff visited the school in person. The school is one of the universities in Zhejiang Province with the most international majors taught in English. It has 12 international majors taught in English at the undergraduate level, 12 international majors taught in English at the master's level, and 2 international majors taught in English have been selected into the Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education's international major construction project. The school has established 3 undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education projects, including the first non-independent undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education institution in Zhejiang Province-Sino-German Engineering College, the first industrial culture college in the country-Sino-German Industrial Culture College, and the first Sino-German "dual system" industry-education integration undergraduate professional pilot project in the country. The German National Research Center is a country and regional research center for higher education institutions of the Ministry of Education. The university has established two overseas Confucius Institutes in Romania and Germany, among which the Confucius Institute at Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj in Romania was rated as the world's "Advanced Confucius Institute". At present, the university is following the grand blueprint drawn by the Fourth Party Congress, taking moral education as the foundation, strengthening application-oriented education, highlighting international characteristics, and implementing the main strategy of "multi-college integration, four-wheel drive" to open and strengthen the university, taking the integration of disciplines and majors as the leader, industry-education integration and international cooperation as the two wings, taking the construction of industrial colleges, industrial industry research institutes, and international characteristic colleges as the main body, and taking the modernization of university governance as the driving force to build a distinctive high-level university.
