Zhongyuan University of Technology is a university with engineering as its main discipline, with electronic information and textiles and clothing as its special advantages, and with coordinated development of multiple disciplines such as engineering, management, art, science, literature, economics, law, and philosophy in Henan Province. The school was founded in 1955 and was originally named Zhengzhou Textile Institute. It was affiliated to the former Ministry of Textile Industry. In 1998, it was transferred to the management of Henan Province and renamed Zhongyuan University of Technology in 2000. The school has 21 teaching colleges (departments) including the School of Textiles, the School of Energy and Environment, the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (School of Industrial Design), the School of Fashion, the School of Computer Science (School of Artificial Intelligence), the School of Automation and Electrical Engineering (School of Integrated Circuits), and the School of Information and Communication Engineering, 75 undergraduate majors, and currently has more than 22,000 full-time students. The school currently has 1,838 faculty members, including 1,313 full-time teachers, 602 teachers with senior professional titles, and 647 teachers with doctoral degrees; 8 high-level leading talents such as academicians, specially-appointed professors of the "Changjiang Scholars Award Program" of the Ministry of Education, and winners of the National Outstanding Young Scientist Fund; 3 national outstanding teachers, 4 experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council; 2 specially-appointed professors and visiting professors of Henan Province, 1 outstanding professional and technical talent in Henan Province, 1 Central Plains teaching master, 8 academic and technical leaders in Henan Province, 10 teaching masters in Henan Province, 8 outstanding teachers in Henan Province, 1 model teacher in Henan Province, and 2 outstanding teachers in the education system of Henan Province. The school currently has two characteristic backbone disciplines in Henan Province, "Intelligent and Aviation Information Technology" and "New Materials and High-end Equipment for Textiles and Clothing". The "Smart New Energy" discipline group has been approved as a special and urgently needed characteristic backbone discipline cultivation and construction project in Henan Province. It has 13 first-level master's degree authorization points, including information and communication engineering, control science and engineering, computer science and technology, and cyberspace security, 60 second-level master's degree authorization points, and 17 master's professional degree authorization categories. There are 9 new rounds of key disciplines in Henan Province, such as electronic information and software engineering. In 2018, it was approved as a construction unit for the granting of doctoral degrees in Henan Province. In 2021, it was approved as a key project cultivation unit for doctoral degrees in Henan Province. The school focuses on building first-class undergraduate education, takes improving the quality of talent training as the core, and actively promotes the reform and innovation of talent training models. In May 2016, the school successfully passed the review and evaluation of undergraduate teaching work of the Ministry of Education. There are currently 10 national first-class undergraduate professional construction points, 4 national characteristic professional construction points, 1 national professional comprehensive reform pilot major, 1 national practical teaching base, and 5 national first-class undergraduate courses. 4 majors have passed the engineering education professional certification. It has the first batch of industrial training centers and university science and technology parks in Henan Province. The school's School of Industrial Design has been approved as a provincial key support design college. Actively exploring the talent training model of "using competition to promote learning and using competition to promote ability", the school ranked 118th in the country, 5th in Henan Province, and first in the national college-type colleges in the eight-round total list of national college student competitions announced by the China Higher Education Society in 2024 (undergraduate TOP300). In 2022, the school was selected as the "Henan Province Innovation and Entrepreneurship College Construction College". The graduation destination implementation rate of graduates remains above 90%. It was selected into the first batch of Henan Provincial Colleges and Universities Intellectual Property Operation Management Center, Henan Provincial Patent Navigation Base, Henan Provincial Colleges and Universities Scientific and Technological Achievement Transformation and Technology Transfer Base, and has been rated as "Henan Province's Top Ten and Fastest Colleges with Comprehensive Intellectual Property Ability". In recent years, the school has undertaken 2,828 vertical and horizontal scientific research projects, including national key R&D program projects, National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, and major national defense special projects. The university has won 59 scientific research awards at the provincial and ministerial levels, including 1 second prize for national technological invention and 4 second prizes for national scientific and technological progress. 1,556 papers have been included in the three major retrievals, 225 academic works have been published, 586 invention patents have been authorized, and 527 software copyrights have been obtained. Engineering and materials science are among the top 1% in the world by ESI, and the latest natural index ranking of basic research capabilities is among the top 1,000 in the world. The school is one of the earliest universities in Henan to carry out Sino-foreign cooperative education projects, and is one of the first 200 universities in the country recognized by the Ministry of Education to have the qualifications to accept foreign students. Since 2002, it has signed joint training doctoral programs with famous foreign universities such as the University of Manchester in the UK, and signed joint training master programs with famous foreign universities such as the University of Applied Sciences in Essen, Germany, and cooperated with famous foreign universities such as the University of Manchester to hold undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative education programs. Zhongyuan University of Technology Zhongyuan St. Petersburg Aviation College was established in cooperation with the St. Petersburg State University of Aerospace Instrumentation in the Russian Federation. An overseas branch, Xuanyuan College of Zhongyuan University of Technology, was established at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand. The "China-Ireland Joint Research Institute of Software Engineering" was jointly established with Athlone Institute of Technology in Ireland. Actively connecting with major national strategies, the school recruited outstanding foreign students from 15 countries along the "Belt and Road" to study in China, and the scale and quality of training have been improved year by year. The school is a standing director unit of the China Higher Education Society's Sino-Foreign Cooperation in Running Schools Research Branch, and is the chairman unit of the first Henan University Transportation Education Alliance. It has successively won the title of Advanced Collective for Introducing Foreign Intelligence in Henan Province and Excellent Collective for Education Foreign Affairs in Henan Province. The school has always adhered to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, fully implemented the party's education policy, implemented the fundamental task of cultivating people with moral integrity, and fought a decisive battle to promote the establishment of Henan University of Electronic Science and Technology, and led the high-quality development of the school's cause with the high-quality party building. The school was rated as the second batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform by the Ministry of Education; it was awarded the title of "National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee" by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League, and was awarded the title of "Excellent Unit" for national summer social practice activities by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League and the All-China Students Federation.
