Zunyi Medical University was founded in 1947. It was the first medical undergraduate school founded by the Communist Party of China after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War. It used to have names such as Guandong Medical College, Dalian University Medical College, and Dalian Medical College. In 1969, in order to support the construction of the "Third Front", the entire school moved to Zunyi City, Guizhou Province and was renamed Zunyi Medical College. It was renamed Zunyi Medical University in 2018 and was approved as a doctoral degree-granting unit in 2021.
