Founded in 1885 as the Prague School of Applied Arts, it is the first and only national art school in Bohemia. The mission of the school at that time was to train skilled art talents for the art industry and train teachers for applied art teaching and secondary school painting teaching.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the school became one of the centers of the Art Nouveau movement and won the grand prize at the Paris World Expo in 1900.
After the establishment of Czechoslovakia in 1918, the school did not obtain the status of "Decorative Art High School", but strengthened its autonomy.
In the late 1920s, influenced by international influences, the school began to focus on constructivism and functionalism.
After the university closed in 1939, the school replaced the Prague Academy of Fine Arts until the end of World War II, when its status was further strengthened.
