Founding background: In 1705, Christian Josef Willenberg asked Emperor Leopold I for permission to teach the "Art of Engineering". In 1707, Joseph I ordered the Prague State to provide engineering education, and on November 9, 1717, Willenberg was awarded the first professorship of engineering in Central Europe. He began teaching on January 7, 1718, when the school was a part of the University of Prague and a secondary education institution.

Development history: In 1806, the School of Engineering Education was transformed into the Prague Polytechnic Institute, becoming an independent school from the University of Prague. In 1920, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the school was renamed the Czech Technical University.
