The University of Freiburg was founded on September 21, 1457. It is the fifth oldest university in Germany. When it was founded, it belonged to Austria and was funded by Archduke Albert VI of Austria. It was originally named Albrecht University after its sponsor. It initially established four major departments: theology, law, medicine and philosophy.
1620 In 1806, the University of Freiburg became a bastion of Catholic faith, which hindered the development of scientific research to a certain extent. However, due to the emergence of new disciplines in the 18th century, the religious beliefs were clearly liberalized.
In 1806, Freiburg became the territory of the Grand Duke of Baden. Since the state of Baden already had the University of Heidelberg, the University of Freiburg was once in crisis of suspension. It was not until 1818 that the Grand Duke of Baden, Ludwig I, came to power and provided it with sufficient funds to enable it to continue to operate and was renamed Albrecht-Ludwig-University of Freiburg.
In the early 19th century, the university established its first student group and became the first university in German history to accept female students in 1898.
In the early 20th century, the University of Freiburg built a large number of new buildings, and the old town of Freiburg and the surrounding areas became the location of university buildings.
During the Nazi period in 1933, Jewish teachers and students were persecuted. After the wartime closure, the university reopened and rebuilt after the end of World War II.
