Introduction

Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich, abbreviated as the University of Munich (LMU), is a world-leading public research university located in the center of Munich, Bavaria, Germany. It is also one of the first three universities selected as Germany's elite universities, and a member of the German U15 University Alliance, the European Research University Alliance and the Global University Alliance.

History

Founding background: In 1472, it was funded by Ludwig IX, Duke of Bavaria-Landshut. When it was founded, it imitated the University of Vienna. It was the first university in the Alte Bavaria region and the eleventh university in the Holy Roman Empire.

Early development: In 1494, Georgian College was established. From 1512, theologian Johannes Eicke reformed the school curriculum to make it more in line with the ideals of humanistic education. In 1736, the medical school moved into a new building near the botanical garden. In 1746, Johann Adam Freiherr von Eckstadt became the principal and reformed the school according to the principles of the Enlightenment.

Changes and development: In 1800, affected by the Napoleonic Wars, the school moved to Landshut, and in 1802 it was officially completed in the Dominican monastery and renamed Ludovico University. In 1826, the school moved to Munich. In 1841, the Georgian College moved into the new building. In the 19th century, the school continued to grow and become one of the important higher education institutions in Germany.

Since the 20th century: From 1905 to 1909, the main building of the school was expanded and modified. In 1918, the first Munich Student Union was established. From 1933, the election system for the principal changed. During World War II, the university was destroyed, but was reopened and rebuilt after the war. In 1973, the college was reorganized into 21 academic fields. In 1999, the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy moved to Dasateng. In 2006, the rector system was reintroduced, and funding from the German Research Society and the Science Council was obtained to establish a graduate school and three clusters of excellence.

Campus

Gerschwest-Shorplatz Campus: The historic main building has been a city landmark since 1840 and houses humanities, economics and social science departments, such as Catholic and Protestant theology, law, economics, Munich School of Management, etc.

English Garden Physics Campus: With 2019 The Nano Institute, which opened in 2013, is the first building of the new Physics Campus in the English Garden.

Sendlinger Tor Campus: Located in the area between the central Sendlinger Tor and Goethe Square, it has a series of specialized hospitals, medical research institutes and other facilities affiliated with the Medical School.
