History and establishment time
The history of the University of Sopron can be traced back to 1735. Its predecessor was the University of Forestry and Technology founded in Selmebanya (now in Slovakia), which mainly trained professionals in mining, forestry and metallurgy. After the First World War, the school moved to Sopron in 1919. On January 1, 2000, seven colleges merged and changed their name to the University of Western Hungary. After the reorganization in 2017, it was renamed the University of Sopron again.
