Introduction
Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest, referred to as TUS, is the third university of technology in Ireland. It was formed by the merger of Athlone Institute of Technology and Limerick Institute of Technology, providing higher education services for the Midlands and Midwest regions.

History and establishment time
Limerick Institute of Technology can be traced back to the Decorative Arts School established on Limmy Street, Limerick on July 3, 1852. It was established as Limerick Institute of Technology by the Limerick City Vocational Education Committee in 1975, became Limerick Institute of Arts, Business and Technology in 1980, became the Regional Institute of Technology in 1993, became the Polytechnic in 1997, and merged with Tipperary College in 2012. In 2016, degree education was introduced at Ennis Learning Center. In 2017, planning permission for a new campus in Coona, Limerick was obtained.
Athlone Institute of Technology was established in 1970 It was established by the Irish government as the Athlone Regional Institute of Technology in 1990, gained more autonomy in 1992, changed its name to Athlone Institute of Technology in 1997, and became an accredited institution with the power to award degrees in 1999.
In 2018, due to the Technical Universities Act passed that year requiring at least two colleges to jointly apply for university status, Athlone Institute of Technology formed an alliance with Limerick Institute of Technology and announced in October 2019 that the goal was to establish a new technical university for the Midwest region, which would be opened on October 1, 2021. The school officially opened on the day.
