The university's modern renaissance began in the early 21st century, but its roots date back to the 5th century AD, when it became known as one of the most prominent Buddhist universities in the ancient world.
Ancient Nalanda University
Founded: The original Nalanda University is believed to have been founded in the 5th century AD by Kumaragupta I of the Gupta dynasty.
