Nalanda University is a historic institution of higher education located in the northeastern Indian state of Bihar, near the city of Rajgir. The university's modern renaissance began in the early 21st century, but its roots date back to the 5th century AD, when it became known as one of the most prominent Buddhist universities in the ancient world.

 

Ancient Nalanda University

Founded: The original Nalanda University is believed to have been founded in the 5th century AD by Kumaragupta I of the Gupta dynasty.

Historical Status: It was one of the largest centers of Buddhist education in ancient India, attracting students and scholars from all over Asia, including the famous Chinese monk Xuanzang.

Academic Scope: Nalanda University not only taught Buddhist philosophy, but also covered a wide range of subjects including logic, linguistics, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, and more.

Decline: Nalanda University was damaged by several foreign raids in the late 12th and early 13th centuries, and was finally completely destroyed by Turkish forces in 119¾.

Modern Nalanda University
