Formal establishment: In 1921, the Ceylon University Association promoted the establishment of Ceylon University College.

Development: In 1942, the University College of Ceylon and the Ceylon Medical College merged to form the University of Ceylon. In 1978, the University of Ceylon was split into six independent autonomous universities under the Universities Act, one of which was the University of Colombo.
