History

On May 15, 1585, Pope Sixtus V signed a papal bull granting the Society of Jesus the right to establish a school in Luxembourg.

The school was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1603 and is located in the upper town district of Luxembourg City, adjacent to the Notre Dame Cathedral. It was modeled after the Jesuit school in Trier and was established in 1684. The school was expanded in 1773.

After the Jesuits were suppressed by Pope Clement XIV in 1773, the school was renamed the Royal College and was managed by clergy, and the curriculum was reformed and expanded.

During the French Revolution and the subsequent political changes, the school was reorganized according to the French education model and changed its name several times, such as "École Centrale" from 1795 to 1802, "École Secondaire" from 1802 to 1808, "Collège Municipal" from 1808 to 1817, and "Athénée Royal Grand-Ducal" in 1817.

During World War II, Luxembourg was occupied by the Nazis, and the school was forced to Germanize and renamed "Gymnasium mit Oberschule für Jungen", and the use of French was prohibited. Many teachers and students of the school died during this period.

After World War II, the old site of the school was too small, so it moved to the Hollerich district in the southwest of the city in 1964, forming the current campus. In 2012 In 2010, a temporary building was built in the school courtyard to accommodate students, and the existing school building was renovated. The renovation was completed at the end of 2016.
