The university was founded by royal decree in 1985 and named after Moroccan scholar, theologian and politician Abou Chouaib Doukkali (1878-1937). In 2004, the School of Multidisciplinary Studies was renamed the School of Law, Economics and Social Sciences; in 2006, the National School of Business Administration was established; in 2008, the National School of Applied Sciences was established.
