The university was founded by royal decree in 1985 and named after Moroccan scholar, theologian and politician Abou Chouaib Doukkali (1878-1937). In 1993, the university moved to its current campus on the outskirts of El Jadida and has been continuously expanding. In 2004, the School of Multidisciplinary Studies was renamed the School of Law, Economics and Social Sciences; in 2006, the National School of Business Administration was established; in 2008, the National School of Applied Sciences was established.
