Eduardo Mondlane University is the oldest and largest public university in Mozambique, located in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique.

History

In 1962, the school was established in Lourenço Marques, the capital of the then Portuguese overseas province of Mozambique, and was originally named the General Research Center of the University of Mozambique. In 1968, it was renamed Lourenço Marques University. After Mozambique's independence in 1975, the university was renamed after Eduardo Mondlane, the first chairman of the Mozambique Liberation Front Party in 1976.
