Founded in 1904 in the German Empire, Danzig has undergone many name changes with the changes of the city. It was called the Free City of Danzig from 1920 to 1939. It was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II and was later liberated by the Soviet Red Army. In 1945, it became a Polish university and has been used ever since.
