The school was founded in 1948, originally named "Petroleum and Gas College", and was established in Bucharest. In the early days, it had a drilling and refining department. In 1957, it was renamed Bucharest Petroleum, Gas and Geology College. From 1967 to 1974, except for the Department of Geology, the remaining departments moved to Ploiesti and resumed the name of "Petroleum and Gas College". In 1974, the Department of Geology was incorporated into the University of Bucharest. After 1989, it was reorganized and renamed the University of Ploiesti in 1992, with the establishment of the Faculty of Secretarial Science and Management Technology.
