The medical education of the university began in 1945 as a branch of the Faculty of Medicine of Babes-Bolyai University. In 1948, the Faculty of Medicine of Targu Mures was established as an independent higher education institution with faculties of medicine, pediatrics, hygiene, dentistry and pharmacy. In 1991, it was renamed the University of Medicine of Targu Mures. In September 2018, the university absorbed the Petru Mayor University and was renamed the George Emil Paradetar Gumures University of Medicine and Technology.
