Historical evolution
After Britain gained dominance in Sudan in 1898, Lord Kitchener proposed to establish Gordon Memorial College in memory of General Charles George Gordon who died in Khartoum. The college was established in 1902 and initially had an industrial school, two high primary schools and a small teacher training center.
In 1905, the College added its first fully equipped bacteriological analysis laboratory, with a donation from Sir Henry Wellcome, an Anglo-American pharmaceutical entrepreneur and archaeologist. In 1906, the College began offering training courses for assistant engineers, land surveyors, and primary school teachers.
In 1924, the College became a full secondary educational institution and incorporated courses such as Islamic law, engineering, surveying, education (teacher training), clerical work, accountancy, and science, while abolishing the primary school and military school. In the same year, the Kitchener School of Medicine was established.
From 1936 to 1940, the College established the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, the Polytechnic School, and the Faculty of Arts. In 1947, the College established links with the University of London, becoming the first overseas participant in its "special relationship" program.
In 1951, Gordon Memorial College and the Kitchener School of Medicine merged to form the University College of Khartoum. On July 24, 1956, Sudan became independent and the University College of Khartoum was granted university status and officially became the University of Khartoum.
