Basic Overview

Establishment time: Its earliest component, Fourah Bay College, was established on February 18, 1827. In 1967, Fourah Bay College merged with Njala University College to become the University of Sierra Leone.

Historical evolution

Fourah Bay College period: Founded by the Church of England Missionary Society in 1827, it is the oldest Western-style university in sub-Saharan Africa. In 1864, it cooperated with Durham University in the United Kingdom to become its branch, cultivating the first batch of higher education talents in West Africa, and is the incubator of African nationalism and pan-Africanism.

Merger and development period: In 1967, Fourah Bay College merged with Njala University College to form the University of Sierra Leone, which adopts a federal system. In 1972, the school changed to a unitary structure, and the School of Public Administration and Management was established in 1980, and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences was established in 1988. In 2005, Njala University College was separated from the University of Sierra Leone, and Fourah Bay College, the School of Public Administration and Management, and the School of Medicine and Health Sciences continued to form the University of Sierra Leone.
