History:
In the 1960s, residents of Union County formed the Higher Education Commission in the hope of attracting a university to the area. In order to expand its influence throughout the state, the University of South Carolina agreed to establish a branch in Union County. In 1965, the campus began teaching with an initial enrollment of 51 students.
