Introduction: Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University is a university in Galankuwa, Gauteng Province, South Africa, focusing on the field of health sciences. It plays an important role in health science education and research in South Africa.

History and establishment: Its history can be traced back to 1976, when it was called the Medical University of South Africa (MEDUNSA), which was established to provide medical education to black students who were restricted from entering most medical schools by the apartheid government. From 2005 to 2015, it was a campus of the University of Limpopo. On January 1, 2015, it was officially renamed Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in memory of Sefako Makgatho, a famous political leader in South Africa in the 20th century.
