The history of the University of Parma can be traced back to 1064, making it one of the oldest universities in Italy. In 1412, the university was reopened by Niccolò III d'Este, but was closed again in 1420. In 1601, Ranuccio I Farnese reopened the university again and obtained a papal bull.
