The university originated from Prodeo University, which was established in 1966.

In 1977, the university was officially renamed LUISS, the Free University of International Social Studies.

In 1994, the board of directors decided to rename the university in honor of Guido Carli, and the full name of the school was Libera Universita Degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli.
