Strossmayer University of Osijek, Croatian Sveučilište Josipa Jurja Strossmayera u Osijeku, Latin Universitas Studiorum Mursensis, commonly referred to as the University of Osijek, is a public university located in Osijek, Croatia. It is the flagship institution of higher education in the Slavonia region and one of the largest and oldest universities in Croatia. Overview Number of students and faculty: About 1,100 faculty in 2015, about 15,000 students in 2018, 13,340 students and 1,251 faculty in 2024. Language of instruction: Degree programs are offered in Croatian and Hungarian, and some courses can also be taught in other languages. History Early origins: The history of higher education in the region dates back to 1707, when the first institution of higher education was established - The Higher Theological Seminary, which opened in the academic year 1707/1708 and offered a three-year philosophy course. The Episcopal College, founded in 1806, became a high school in 1850 and a Higher Theological Seminary in 1931. The Royal Male Teachers' School in 1893 became the Faculty of Education in 1961.
Founding of the University: The university in the modern sense was founded in 1975, the initiative of which dates back to March 26 of that year, when the Croatian Parliament adopted a decision to establish the University of Osijek. On May 31, 1975, the relevant colleges and institutions signed an agreement on the establishment of the university. Since then, the school has continued to develop and has established several colleges.
