Shanxi University is one of the universities with the longest history of running schools in China. It is a national "double first-class" construction university and a ministry-province joint university built by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shanxi Province. The predecessor of the school was the Shanxi University Hall founded in 1902. Its long cultural heritage can be traced back to the Jinyang Academy, Sanli Academy and Lingdetang Academy in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Shanxi University Hall Translation Academy founded by the school is the second translation academy founded by a modern university in China, which has effectively promoted cultural exchanges between China and the West. In the 1920s and 1930s, Shanxi University was full of celebrities and talents. From the Anti-Japanese War to the eve of the founding of New China, Shanxi University traveled to many places and insisted on running schools. Many teachers and students participated in the Anti-Japanese War and devoted themselves to the democratic revolution, and gave their blood and lives for national independence and people's liberation. In the early days of the founding of New China, Shanxi University had six colleges, including literature, law, science, engineering, agriculture, and medicine. The number of faculty and staff increased to more than 1,000, and the number of students reached nearly 2,200, making it a veritable socialist comprehensive university. In the 1950s, the School of Law was renamed the School of Finance and Economics and merged into Renmin University of China, the Department of Law was merged into Peking University, the Department of Metallurgical Engineering was merged into Beijing Iron and Steel Institute, the Department of Textile Engineering and the Department of Mining Engineering were merged into Northwest Polytechnic University, and the School of Engineering, the School of Agriculture, and the School of Medicine were established independently. Shanxi University has made important contributions to the adjustment of the national higher education layout. Since the reform and opening up, Shanxi University has made remarkable achievements in running schools, and has achieved a series of major breakthroughs such as doctoral programs, national key disciplines, national key laboratories, key research bases for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, academicians, and national science and technology awards. In 1998, Shanxi University became a key university in Shanxi Province; in 2005, it became one of the earliest batch of provincial and ministerial co-construction universities; in 2012, it became a university selected for the "Comprehensive Strength Improvement Project for Colleges and Universities in Central and Western China". In 2018, it became a ministry-provincial co-construction university jointly built by the Ministry of Education and the People's Government of Shanxi Province. In 2022, it will enter the ranks of national "double first-class" construction universities. The school has always been committed to its original aspirations, and has taken firm steps, step by step, to achieve a historic leap from a local university to a "national team" of higher education. At the new starting point, the school is comprehensively building a high-level comprehensive research university, moving towards the goal of becoming one of China's outstanding and well-known universities. The school currently has 19 first-level doctoral degree authorization points, 34 first-level master's degree authorization points, 29 master's professional degree types, 17 postdoctoral mobile stations, and independently set up 6 second-level doctoral and master's degree points outside the catalog, and independently set up 4 interdisciplinary doctoral and master's degree points outside the catalog. Philosophy and physics were selected as national "double first-class" construction disciplines. Philosophy of science and technology and optics were selected as national key disciplines. Chemistry, engineering, materials science, environment/ecology, physics, computer science and technology, botany and zoology, agricultural science and social sciences, pharmacology and toxicology, etc. 10 disciplines entered the top 1% of ESI. It has 1 national key laboratory, 1 key research base for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 2 provincial and ministerial collaborative innovation centers, 2 key laboratories of the Ministry of Education, 1 key laboratory of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, 1 national and local joint engineering laboratory, 2 engineering research centers of the Ministry of Education, 3 "111" discipline innovation and intelligence introduction bases, and 1 national international science and technology cooperation base. Shanxi University adheres to the mission of cultivating talents with morality and cultivating talents, and cultivates talents from all over the world. There are 24,155 full-time undergraduates, 9,052 full-time master's students, 1,564 part-time master's students, and 1,370 full-time doctoral students. There are 87 undergraduate majors, covering 10 major disciplines including literature, history, philosophy, science, engineering, economics, management, law, education, and art. There are 42 national first-class majors and 31 provincial first-class majors. The physics major was selected as the base of the Ministry of Education's Basic Discipline Outstanding Student Training Program 2.0. We have vigorously strengthened innovation and entrepreneurship education, built 3 national experimental teaching centers, 2 national virtual simulation experimental teaching projects, and were selected as the first batch of national innovation and entrepreneurship education reform demonstration universities and the top 50 universities with typical experience in innovation and entrepreneurship. In recent years, students have repeatedly achieved outstanding results in the "Challenge Cup" National College Students' Extracurricular Academic and Scientific Works Competition, the Internet + College Students' Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the ASC World College Students' Supercomputing Competition and other competitions, and won nearly 130 national awards. More than ten gold, silver and bronze medals have been won in the Olympic Games, Asian Games, National Games and other events. The school's ability to undertake major national scientific research projects is increasing. In recent years, it has undertaken a large number of major scientific research tasks such as the ground-based gravitational wave detection large scientific device, the National Supercomputing (Taiyuan) Center, and the Shanxi Yellow River Laboratory. It has won nearly 20 national scientific research awards, including the National Natural Science Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award, the National Science and Technology Invention Award, and the First Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences Research in Colleges and Universities of the Ministry of Education. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, the university undertook 14 national key projects, including national key R&D program projects, 444 National Natural Science Foundation projects, and 306 National Social Science Foundation projects and humanities and social science research projects of the Ministry of Education. The university vigorously strengthened the cooperation between industry, academia and research, promoted the transformation of scientific and technological achievements, and established more than ten industrial technology research institutes in cooperation with key state-owned enterprises. It has established strategic cooperative relations with more than ten cities in Shanxi Province. The university was selected as one of the "first batch of universities' scientific and technological achievements transformation and technology transfer bases" by the Ministry of Education, and the Shanxi University Science and Technology Park has become a national university science and technology park. Shanxi University regards the construction of the teaching staff as an important basic work.
