Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine is one of the first batch of national "double first-class" construction universities, a key university for Guangdong high-level universities, and a Chinese medicine university jointly built by the Guangdong Provincial People's Government, the Ministry of Education, and the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The school originated from the Guangdong School of Traditional Chinese Medicine founded in 1924, renamed Guangdong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1936, built into Guangdong School of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1952, and established Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1956 with the approval of the State Council. It is one of the first four higher undergraduate colleges of traditional Chinese medicine in New China. In 1995, it was officially renamed Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. The school currently has two campuses in University Town and Sanyuanli, with a total area of 1,205 acres. There are 15 secondary colleges, 18 independent scientific research institutions and 3 directly affiliated hospitals. There are also 8 school-government cooperation hospitals, as well as 30 non-directly affiliated hospitals and off-campus practice bases that meet the teaching and practice needs of various disciplines of the school. The school adheres to the principle of cultivating morality and building a first-class Chinese medicine higher education system with Chinese characteristics and world-class standards. The discipline of traditional Chinese medicine in the school is a national "double first-class" construction discipline and a national first-level key discipline. It has 6 key disciplines for the construction of high-level universities in Guangdong Province (traditional Chinese medicine, integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine, Chinese medicine, clinical medicine, pharmacy, epidemic prevention and emergency management), and 25 key disciplines of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Seven disciplines, including clinical medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, chemistry, biology and biochemistry, agronomy, molecular biology and genetics, and neuroscience and behavior, are among the top 1% in the ESI global ranking. The school has 24 undergraduate majors, 29 majors for students, 7 first-level discipline master's degree authorization points, 3 master's professional degree authorization categories, 3 doctoral first-level discipline degree authorization points, 1 doctoral professional degree authorization category, and 3 postdoctoral research mobile stations. There are currently 20,792 students, including 12,441 undergraduates, 6,606 graduate students, 1,020 students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and 725 foreign students. It has 8 national first-class undergraduate professional construction sites and 11 provincial first-class undergraduate professional construction sites; it has obtained 16 national first-class undergraduate courses and curriculum ideological and political demonstration courses, and 100 provincial first-class undergraduate courses. The school is one of the first batch of universities in the country to implement the "Excellent Doctor (TCM) Education and Training Program Reform Pilot" and undertake the "TCM Outstanding Innovative Talent Model Reform Pilot Project". It has been selected as the second batch of national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. Over the past century, it has trained 130,000 TCM professionals for the country, and trained a group of leading figures in the field of TCM represented by Academicians Wu Yiling and Liu Liang of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. The school covers an area of 1,205 acres, 13,530, 13,530 faculty and staff, 7 TCM overseas centers, 110 training senior TCM talents with many countries and regions. The school insists on introducing and training, and building a first-class faculty. In history, a large number of famous doctors and masters represented by Luo Yuankai, Situ Ling, Deng Tietao, Huang Yaoshen, Liang Naijin, Liu Shichang, and Li Guoqiao taught at the school. At present, the university has a group of famous scholars and professors, including Liu Liang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Xuan Guowei, Zhou Daihan, and Lin Yi, as well as Qihuang scholars, national outstanding young scientists, and chief scientists of the national "973 Program". The university has 13,530 faculty and staff, including 1,358 in the main campus and 12,172 in affiliated hospitals, of which 2,260 have senior professional titles. The university has 176 national talents and 279 provincial talents, including 1 full-time academician, 4 national masters of medicine, 5 national famous Chinese medicine practitioners, 1 chief scientist of the Qihuang Project, 2 special post scholars of the National Talent Reward Program, 1 national outstanding young scientist, 10 Qihuang scholars, 6 national candidates of the Hundred Thousand Talents Project, 2 young top talents of the Ten Thousand Talents Program, 4 national outstanding young scientists, 1 overseas outstanding young scientist, 6 young Qihuang scholars, 12 provincial Pearl River scholars, 14 provincial special support programs, and 96 provincial famous Chinese medicine practitioners. The school adheres to the "four orientations" and carries out organized scientific research innovation. It has 10 national scientific research platforms, including the National Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome, the "National Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Syndrome Co-built by the Province and the Ministry", and the "National Medical Research and Education Integration Innovation Platform"; it has 51 provincial and ministerial scientific research platforms, including the "Ministry of Education Key Laboratory of Lingnan Chinese Medicine Resources", "International Joint Laboratory for Translational Medicine Research on Prevention and Treatment of Tumors with Traditional Chinese Medicine", "Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Prescription and Syndrome Research", "Guangdong Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Science Data Center", "Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory for Traditional Chinese Medicine and Immune Disease Research", "Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Emergency Research", "Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture", and "Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Traditional Chinese Medicine Prevention and Treatment of Tumor Translational Pharmacy Research". In the past five years, 2,332 vertical scientific research projects have been added, 1.08 billion yuan of vertical funds have been obtained, 522 national projects have been undertaken, and 19 provincial and ministerial science and technology awards have been won. The school insists on social services and strengthens the construction of high-end medical resources. There are 3 directly affiliated hospitals, 8 hospitals co-built with the government, and 30 non-directly affiliated hospitals. The First and Second Affiliated Hospitals were selected as the National Traditional Chinese Medicine Inheritance and Innovation Center, the National Regional Medical Center Construction Export Hospital, the National Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinical Research Base, and the Guangdong Provincial High-level Hospital Key Construction Unit, becoming the Guangdong Provincial Public Hospital Reform and High-quality Development Demonstration Hospital. Among them, the First Affiliated Hospital is also the National Major Epidemic Treatment Base and "one of the hospitals with the most regional traditional Chinese medicine (specialty) diagnosis and treatment centers in the country"; the Second Affiliated Hospital has ranked first in the "China Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital·Top 100 Competitiveness" for 9 consecutive years, and ranked first in the national traditional Chinese medicine hospital science and technology value for 4 consecutive years. The Third Affiliated Hospital is a Class 3 Class A orthopedic hospital in Guangdong Province, with traditional Chinese medicine orthopedics as the leading specialty of the hospital. The Guangdong Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine is the first batch of national second-level museums in colleges and universities nationwide. It has been identified as the first batch of national traditional Chinese medicine culture publicity and education bases by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine together with the First Affiliated Hospital and the Second Affiliated Hospital. The school has established industry-university-research cooperation with 15 cities and prefectures inside and outside the province. The series of Chinese patent medicines developed by the school, such as Wei Nai An, Gu Xian Tablets, Xiao Ke Pills, Jin Fo Zhi Tong Pills, Zi Shen Yu Tai Pills and Wei Zhi Tong Capsules, have become representative products of Guangdong's pharmaceutical industry and are sold well throughout the country. The school actively carries out the construction of the Southern Medicine Germplasm Resource Bank (Nursery) and the Southern Medicine GAP Industrialization Base, and guides the establishment of 50 standardized planting bases of Chinese medicinal materials featuring "Southern Medicine" in the province, with a planting area of more than 2 million mu. The school adheres to an international perspective and promotes high-level foreign exchanges and cooperation. The artemisinin compound and malaria prevention and control program developed by the school with completely independent intellectual property rights have been applied to more than 10 countries including Comoros, Sao Tome and Principe, greatly reducing the incidence and mortality of malaria and creating a miracle of human anti-malaria. The school also sent a medical team to Africa to perform foreign aid missions, and established traditional medicine research centers in Comoros, Sao Tome and Principe and Papua New Guinea. Seven national-level overseas centers for traditional Chinese medicine have been established in Europe and Africa, and three national-level international cooperation bases for traditional Chinese medicine have been jointly built with countries and regions such as the United States. We have carried out distance courses and exchange student programs with many Ivy League universities such as Harvard University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. We have taken the lead in establishing six professional alliances such as the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Traditional Chinese Medicine Alliance, established the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Traditional Chinese Medicine Innovation Center, built the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory of the Ministry of Education, and established three inheritance workstations at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since 1974, we have enrolled foreign students and have trained more than 20,000 senior talents in traditional Chinese medicine for more than 110 countries and regions. In the new era and new journey, the school adheres to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, thoroughly implements the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, fully implements the party's education policy, takes root in South Guangdong and looks at the world, inherits the essence, maintains integrity and innovates, and actively integrates into the construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Traditional Chinese Medicine Highland and the new round of construction of a strong province of traditional Chinese medicine, and strives unremittingly to build a first-class university with "Chinese characteristics and world-class" in an all-round way, and makes new and greater contributions to the realization of the Chinese dream of the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
