Nankai University is a key comprehensive university directly under the Ministry of Education and the alma mater of the beloved Premier Zhou Enlai. The school was founded in 1904 and established in 1919 by modern patriotic educators Yan Xiu and Zhang Boling, who adhered to the concept of saving the country through education. In 1937, the campus was bombed by the Japanese invaders, and the school moved south. It formed the National Changsha Temporary University with Peking University and Tsinghua University. In 1938, it moved to Kunming and was renamed the National Southwest Associated University. In 1946, it returned to Tianjin to resume school and was renamed a national university. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, the development of the school has always received the cordial care of the Party and the State. Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of the school and visited it in person; Premier Zhou Enlai returned to his alma mater three times for guidance; Comrade Deng Xiaoping met with the mathematics master Chen Xingshen and instructed the establishment of the Nankai Institute of Mathematics; Comrade Jiang Zemin and Comrade Hu Jintao successively visited Nankai. Especially since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedly affirmed the development of Nankai, replied to and encouraged related work, and visited Nankai in person on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the school. After the adjustment of colleges and departments of colleges and universities across the country in 1952, the school became a national key university that emphasizes both liberal arts and science. Since the reform and opening up, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Tianjin, the school has developed into a comprehensive research university that is a key construction of the national "211 Project" and "985 Project". In September 2015, after the completion and opening of the new campus, the "one school and three campuses" school-running pattern of Balitai Campus, Jinnan Campus and TEDA Campus was initially formed. In September 2017, the school was selected as a national "double first-class" construction university. The school adheres to the school motto of "fairness, fairness, and constant progress", promotes the tradition of "patriotism, dedication, innovation, and teamwork" and the concept of "governing the country with literature, strengthening the country with science, and enriching the country with business", takes "knowing China and serving China" as its purpose, takes the outstanding alumnus Zhou Enlai as a model, cultivates talents, prospers academics, strengthens the country, inherits civilization, and strives to build a world-class university. The university covers an area of 4.4312 million square meters, of which the Balitai campus covers an area of 1.216 million square meters, the Jinnan campus covers an area of 2.4589 million square meters, and the TEDA campus covers an area of 67,200 square meters. The total building area of the school is 1.9449 million square meters. The university is one of the comprehensive and research-oriented universities in China with a complete range of disciplines. In the long-term process of running schools, it has formed the characteristics of giving equal importance to liberal arts and sciences, with a broad foundation, and highlighting application and innovation. The university has 28 professional colleges, and the disciplines cover literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, education, and art. There are 6 national "double first-class" construction disciplines, 6 national key disciplines in the first-level disciplines (covering 35 second-level disciplines), 9 national key disciplines in the second-level disciplines, and 32 first-level Tianjin key disciplines. In the global discipline evaluation system, there are 17 disciplines in the top 1%, and chemistry, materials science, and engineering science are in the top 1‰. The school implements the fundamental task of cultivating students with moral integrity, attaches importance to the all-round development of students' morality, intelligence, physique, aesthetics and labor, deepens and promotes the reform of education and teaching, and builds a "public ability" quality education system with Nankai characteristics. The school has 34,806 students, including 17,339 undergraduates, 11,863 postgraduates and 5,604 doctoral students. There are 84 undergraduate majors; 10 first-level disciplines authorized to confer master's degrees, 24 master's professional degree authorization points; 32 first-level disciplines authorized to confer doctoral degrees, 1 second-level doctoral point not covered by the first-level discipline, and 4 doctoral professional degree authorization points. There are 8 bases for the 2.0 program for the cultivation of outstanding students in basic disciplines, 56 national first-class undergraduate major construction points, 7 majors in the "Strengthening Basics Plan", and more than 10 bases and platforms for various national experimental teaching, textbook construction, cultural inheritance, innovation and entrepreneurship. 59 national first-class undergraduate courses were selected, 9 people won the national teaching master award, 9 national teaching teams were awarded, and 58 national teaching achievement awards were won. The university regards the construction of the teaching staff as a basic work, and strives to cultivate a high-quality expert teaching staff with strong political qualities, superb professional skills and high educational level. The university currently has 2,286 full-time teachers, including 959 professors and 896 associate professors; there are 1,052 doctoral supervisors and 795 master's supervisors. There are 13 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 7 academicians of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World, 38 leading talents of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Program", 37 young top talents, 49 distinguished professors and 34 young scholars of the "Changjiang Scholars Program" of the Ministry of Education, 70 winners of the "National Outstanding Youth Science Fund", 56 winners of the "National Excellent Youth Science Fund", 33 selected candidates of the National "Million Talents Project", 7 National Natural Science Foundation Innovation Research Groups, 10 Ministry of Education Innovation Teams, and 2 National Huang Danian-style Teacher Teams of Colleges and Universities. There are 21 experts with outstanding contributions at the national level, 17 members of the discipline review group of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, and more than 40 chief scientists of major projects such as the "973 Program", "863 Program", and the National Key R&D Program. The school adheres to the "four orientations", aims at the world's scientific and technological frontiers and major national needs, and vigorously strengthens basic research and original innovation. The school currently has 4 national key laboratories, 1 national key laboratory, 1 national engineering research center, 1 national and local joint engineering research center, 3 2011 collaborative innovation centers, 1 frontier science center, and more than 80 provincial and ministerial scientific research bases in natural sciences. It actively promotes the cultivation and construction of basic research centers and interdisciplinary science centers. The project led by Academician Zhou Qilin won the first prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2019. The school plays the advantages of a major center of philosophy and social sciences, actively serves the governance of the country in the new era, and promotes the prosperity and development of cultural civilization. The university currently has 6 key research bases for humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education, 1 philosophy and social science laboratory of the Ministry of Education, 1 national human rights education and training base, more than 50 provincial and ministerial scientific research institutions in humanities and social sciences, and the number of selected national philosophy and social science achievement libraries ranks among the top universities in the country. A number of excellent think tanks have become "think tanks" and "talent pools" for national ministries and local governments. The school fully connects with national and regional development strategies, actively integrates into the main battlefield of economic and social development, and has established close cooperative relations with a number of universities, enterprises, research institutes, and government departments. Based on the "two overall situations", the school continues to promote high-level opening up to the outside world and continuously expand the school's international reputation and influence. It has established cooperative relations with nearly 340 internationally renowned universities and academic institutions, and carried out high-level exchanges and cooperation in teacher-student exchanges, joint training, and collaborative scientific research. The school currently has nearly 600 foreign teachers and foreign experts who come to the school to give lectures, and more than 1,300 international students from more than 90 countries and regions are studying at the school. It has built 8 overseas Confucius Institutes and Chinese language centers, including the Confucius Institute at the University of Glasgow, and co-built international joint research institutions with the University of Birmingham, and maintained close contact and deepened substantive cooperation with international organizations such as the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the World Federation of Engineering Organizations, and the World Economic Forum. More than 10 internationally renowned figures, including Chen Xingshen, have been awarded honorary doctoral degrees, and many Nobel Prize winners and international politicians have been hired as honorary professors of our school. A group of well-known scholars, famous politicians, and entrepreneurs at home and abroad have been hired as visiting professors and part-time professors of our school.
